1946 FL

Renegade ride went from rolling with the Hell’s Angels to hiding out in a barn for 15 years.

What you see here might just look like an old and dirty 1946 FL, and it is. But the reason the current owner decided not to wash it is pretty legit. You see, this bike was originally owned and ridden by former Hell’s Angels member Dave, “The Hat.”

Dave rode the FL with the Hell’s Angels until he suffered an injury that forced him to give it up. After that fateful day, “The Hat” would only roll it out and start it up every now and then. The FL sat in a barn for 15 years until it was purchased by the current owner.

After realizing what a cool piece of history he had acquired, the owner decided to share his story and these cool shots online. Clearly the amazing story justifies the $28,000 price tag, and outlaw bikes are hot on the market these days. You can thank Sons of Anarchy for that!

1946 FL

Beneath the mystique, this is a highly modified 1946 FL in its own right. All of the unnecessary bits and pieces have been removed, which is quite typical of the chopper style. The look was prominent in 1960s Californian culture, and it’s still cool today.

These early FLs had the much loved 74 cubic inch Knucklehead overhead valve engine. It replaced the old Flathead used in the highly successful UH and ULH of the previous generation. The FL would soldier on mostly unchanged until 1948, when the Panhead made its debut.

If you’re a fan of Harley and outlaw biker history, you can’t do much better than this Hell’s Angels original. There is so much cool stuff going on here that you could literally write a book about it.
