The Wall Street Journal is reporting that San Francisco is considering switching from Harleys to BMWs, Kawasakis, or Victory bikes. While this is disappointing, I can’t say it’s terribly surprising.

Tons of cops in Los Angeles are already riding BMWs, and when I was living up in Seattle, it seemed like Harley was being phased out as well. Now I can understand–especially when budgets are so tight–why departments might want to switch to a bike with lower maintenance costs. Apparently, it’s so rough in SF that the entire fleet of 98 bikes is maintained by one mechanic.

But I don’t have to like it. The idea that cops in America are relying on foreign hardware–Victory excepted–doesn’t seem right. What’s next? Are we going to see Camry cruisers?

What do you think? Will maintenance make cops on Hogs a thing of the past? Do you care? Head over to the Forum and sound off!
