Who Needs Dealerships? Private Sellers and Smaller Shops Offering Good Bikes at Good Prices

It seems everybody is griping about high prices in Harley Davidson world, and with good reason.

It isn’t just new bikes that seem to be creeping up in dollars, it’s used bikes as well. You have to hunt hard to find good deals on Harley Davidson motorcycles these days.

I’m almost always on the hunt, so I’ll share some of my finds. These aren’t eye-popping deals, just good ones in my opinion. I’ve checked out the sellers as well.

2020 Iron 883 $6,950. The dealership, Dream Machines of Austin, Texas, says the book value is $9,105, although JD Power says the average retail is $7,285.

Still, that’s a pretty good price for a good beginner’s bike, with ape-hangers already installed. That can be an expensive mod.

The bike has 10,832 miles, is painted denim black and comes with Vance and Hines short shots and air cleaner, as well as a host of other accessories, which can be good or bad depending on your preferences. Dream Machines ships ships all over the country; for example, a company spokesman told hdforums that it would cost $550 to ship this bike to North Florida.

2004 Wide Glide $5,495. That price is in line with JD Power’s average retail value: $5,149.

Opinions differ on how Dynas will hold their value since the Motor Company discontinued them, but they are still attractive buys for legions of HD riders.

This Wide Glide could make an excellent second bike. It has 23,000 miles on it, less than 3,000 miles a year, and V&H chrome exhaust. I don’t usually like white motorcycles, but this one caught my eye. If you like your bike white, you’ll probably like it even more than I do.

The seller is Motor Exports Experts in Ormond Beach, FL. They are not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, but get generally good reviews from consumer review sites. They had one complaint reported by the BBB that was resolved.

2015 Breakout $11,800. Average retail is $12,350 according to JD Power.

This black Breakout, HD’s factory chopper, has 10,72 miles. It’s got the classic 240 mm rear tire, the 35 degree rake and is powered by the Twin Cam 103.

The seller, Reaper Cycles, says it has a “barely noticeable” dent under the raised Harley emblem on the gas tank. The company advertises itself as “home of no-dealer fees, no-haggle pricing and no-bullshit.” They get generally excellent consumer reviews.

2013 Fat Boy Lo $6,900. Average retail $8,810.

I’ve had three Fat Boys so I admit my bias, but in my opinion the Fat Boy Lo is the best-looking heavy cruiser the Motor Company has ever come out with.

This one, well below average retail, is from a private seller in Burleson, Texas, on Cycle Trader. It has 12,603 miles on it. The bike is a beautiful red and black and set up for serious cruising, including stretched saddlebags and rider and passenger backrests.

2023 Street Glide Special $25,990. Starting MSRP for this bike is $28,000. This one is also being sold by a private seller who says “No dealer prep, freight, surcharge and the usual mumbo jumbo charged by HD dealers.”

Makes sense. It only has 680 miles on it, and has a “$2000 special dealer installed orange over black color combo,” as well as Tab mufflers, an HD heel shifter and Streamliner grips, according to the seller.

The seller also says he has clear title, so if you’re looking to spend well over $30,000 for a new Street Glide Special, you might want to check this one out.
