Harley-Davidson’s 2017 Softail Breakout is the ideal motorcycle for those that enjoy having a piece of eye candy that can travel at high speeds in a straight line. This is a simple summation of the bike’s attributes as highlighted by Ultimate Motorcycling in its new review, and, of course, we fully agree with that assessment. Afterall, no one can deny that the new Softail is one beautiful machine, and anyone who has ever gotten some road time on a Harley can attest to its power and speed. Ultimate Motorcycling puts it best when it mentions that the 2017 Softail Breakout “is an imposing motorcycle that knows its place, and in its place, it is a dominant machine.”
The respected motorcycle publication gives the new bike a spin and provides carefully considered feedback that specifically focuses on the bike’s dual purpose. Now, when motorcyclists speak of “dual-purpose” bikes, images of tall, skinny motorcycles with off-road tires come to mind. Harley-Davidson hasn’t entered the dual-purpose segment yet, but if you widen the definition of what a dual-purpose bike can be to include motorcycles that are excellent at doing two things, then the 2017 Harley Softail Breakout is clearly a dual-purpose machine.

The steady “straight-line” ride comes courtesy of the bike’s strategically designed wheelbase, which is over 67 inches, along with a rake of 35 degrees that is “kicked out an additional two degrees thanks to an offset triple clamp.” Having a fat 18-inch rear and 21-inch front Dunlop tire also helps the bike resist leaning. The Harley-Davidson’s 2017 Softail Breakout’s good looks, however, are only surface deep. The bike is designed with the rider’s comfort in mind and Harley made sure that every aspect of the Softail Breakout’s design was considered in relation to the rider’s position on the bike. “…The bars come back far enough to prevent fatigue and back pain, the pegs aren’t too much of a reach, and the air cleaner stays out of the way of your knee…” says the outlet.
Another standout feature on the Softail Breakout is the bike’s engine. “The High Output Twin Cam 103B is a potent motor that stands ready to do battle at stoplights,” declares Ultimate Motorcycling. “Twist the throttle at any rpm, and be ready to move forward quickly. You only have to hit 3,000 rpm to tap into the Breakout’s 100 ft. lbs. of torque. Shift quickly and leave lesser vehicles behind.”
