Storz Performance SP1200RR: Who the Hell is Buying These?

Earlier today, one of my colleagues forwarded over an AutoWeek story on the Storz Performance 1200RR.

Now, I love the style of the classic XR750 dirt-tracker, and I dug what Aaron from Gas Monkey Garage did with his Sportster project. If I was going to build a custom machine, I’d definitely go for a cafe style, so initially, I thought this was pretty cool. Then I found out Storz wants 25k—in like, American dollars—for one of these creations, and I immediately wondered if I’d slipped through a wormhole into some kind of upside down bizzaro world. Here’s a quote from the story describing the transformation from stock Sportster to corner carver:

Foremost, Harley’s typical Barcalounger-esque seating cedes to sportier ergonomics, and the handmade aluminum gas tank, road-race-style seatback, two-tone paint and ceramic-coated pipes further define the machine. A proprietary Storz/Ceriani inverted fork and premium Öhlins shocks, aftermarket disc brakes with four-piston calipers and uprated 18-inch Metzeler rubber improve handling. Chain final drive replaces the OE Gilmer belt, while lower clip-on handlebars, a steering damper and rear-set foot controls complete the transition.

Given that a brand-new “donor bike” starts at under 11, a list price of 25k seems like a freaking insane amount of coin to spend on this bike. For that kind of money, I’d opt for something from DP Customs.

Did I have too many lunch beers? Or is this a little pricey? Head over to the Forums and chime in! >>
