Museum of Failure Features Harley. Wait. What?!?
Think the Motor Company can do no wrong? Think again, says Sweden.
There are museums for just about everything these days. Perhaps you’ve been to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin or Ohio’s American Motorcyclist Association Hall of Fame. Harleys feature prominently in both of those museums.
However, the Harley-Davidson name is now appearing in a considerably less flattering way in a new museum in Helsingborg, Sweden. That’s because the Museum of Failure is set to open there soon.
There have been a few Harley-Davidson models that haven’t done well over the years. Some, like the XLCR Cafe Racer have become desirable classics, while others, such as the 1977 Confederate Edition, are better left in the past. Thankfully, Harley-Davidson didn’t make its way into the Swedish museum because of its motorcycles.
It’s a joke among motorcyclists that Harley-Davidson will slap its logo on just about anything, and fans of The Motor Company will snap it up. However, there’s at least one time that particular stereotype wasn’t accurate: Legendary Harley-Davidson cologne, originally offered in the mid-1990s.
Who wouldn’t want to smell like a Harley-Davidson? Well, when we get off of our bike after a nice, long ride, we usually smell like a mixture of oil and gasoline, and once the leather jacket and riding boots come off, we’re pretty ripe.
All of that stuff about a Harley making you irresistible to women must be an urban legend. Our girlfriends won’t come near us at all after we’ve been out riding, not until we’ve had a nice long shower.
Maybe someone should market a cologne based on the smell of a fuel-injected, water-cooled bike. We’re sure those guys smell better after a day of riding, but not by much. With the recent release of the Milwaukee Eight, maybe it’s high time they try again. If nothing else, there will be a spot for it at Sweden’s Museum of Failure.
