Thats far from the truth. There's a science to paint that requires accurate scales (for color) and a hardener. Spray paint hardens when exposed to air, real paint will dry solid in a sealed can because of the hardener and its not soft like spray paint when it cures. What you did is a great way to paint a bike you're not keeping.

Most of the prep work is to assure adhesion...color sanding and buffing is what makes modern paint look good... I have done many garage paint jobs that looked like crap "as shot" and after sanding/buffing you would be hard pressed to find a flaw... |
