So who makes this system? Is it respected in the navigation world?

I understand the Naviextras is the Map update provider but I thought that the Infotainment system was manufactured by Harman Becker.

They are a huge company and have their mapping system in OEM cars as well as aftermarket units.

The issue with updates isn't that NNG Software Developing (Naviextras) doesn't offer updates on a regular basis, they do. The issue is that HD has to pay them when HD wants to update the system. Currently, Naviextras runs updates twice each year in autumn and spring according to other OEM update sites.

It is but Harman is not a navigation or mapping company. It's just like they don't manufacturer the resistors, chips and screens for example. All these components are outsourced and Harman assembles them in to a main unit and places QNX software in it and the map program.

They claim that they pioneered in-dash navigation systems:

HARMAN pioneered the art of in-dash automotive navigation nearly two decades ago, introducing turn-by-turn route guidance via voice commands and detailed graphics. Our GPS satellite navigation systems have long kept drivers aware of their precise real-time location, and guided them in a choice of multiple languages at each step along the way. Since then, we have constantly refined the in-car user experience with such innovations as 3-D navigation; virtual city models with realistic buildings and route markers; and embedded Points of Interest to show favorite hotels, restaurants, etc. ahead.

Naviextras indicates that they are the update provider of choice:

Naviextras.com is the official map update portal for a growing number ofpersonal navigation devices of several manufacturers. All brand or trademark listed herein are for identification purposes only. All brand names, trademarks and copyrights are the property of their respective owners.

The maps are now, what, 3 years out of date? There's simply no way to update them.

Be careful if you use the Dealer Locator function. After the 3rd time took me to an empty parking lot where a dealer USED to be I don't bother any more. The system is good enough, but the maps are becoming more and more useless.

I understand this. My point is, that Harman just gathers all the parts and pieces and put it all together.

With the iGO Navigation engine, the industry's most flexible and modular engine at the core, NNG developed a one-of-a-kind low-cost and perfectly integrated LBS solution for Harman and Chrysler to challenge previous automotive line-fit practices.

The task

For the new Chrysler RAM 1500 and Dodge Viper models, Chrysler’s No.1 request from Tier 1 Harman and NNG was the making of an intuitive and clever navigation solution embedded in an “all-knowing” user interface (UI) for its Uconnect multi-media system; a UI that was easy to learn, visually attractive and safe to use to match modern user behavior.

The challenge

Delivering a navigation software, content and services solution tailored for Uconnect challenged NNG to innovate the integration of its software with other services in the head unit through a previously unmatched cost-efficient development process, and provide a platform for a global content update solution that would support the lifecycle of a vehicle.

The solution

From the beginning of the project in 2011, NNG maintained constant contact with the experts of Harman as well as content, software and services providers around the world. Working as one across Hungary, the United States, India and other locations, the NNG team enabled seamless technical and visual integration of the iGO Navigation engine with the Uconnect

Mine are just approaching 2 years old. I have 2013 Q2 in mine and is available on the naviextras site. I know some still have 2012 Q2 installed.
