Can you use the internals from the original tank on the new tank?

You could, BUT the fuel guage would be incorrect and there would be gas in the right hand side of the tank that wouldn't be used. Go to a dealer and look at both the 3.5 and 5 G tanks you will see the 3.5 allows fuel to crossover to the left in normal operation, cornering. The 5 G wont, some fuel will be trapped that is why the 5G fuel pump has the additional pickup. NOTE the pumps are identical. The 5G Pump has the port opened for and the additional pickup.

got it, so you basically need the whole Lowrider Tank and assembly with it in order for it to work?

In a word, Yes. You still end up with opening at the seat end where the original console attached. Im still trying to decide what to do with that.
I did this conversion to have the larger fuel capacity so I could be on a par with the touring bikes in our group.

Default Which tank?

That top part number in a previous comment is the tank you used to make this happen right? You just filled the other hole with a flush mount gas cap?

essentially yes. The part number I quoted is from the 2018 Softail parts book. This tank doesn't have a hole on the left just an indentation that is covered with a dummy cap.

Thank you for the information! My bike got tapped by a car and its there getting fixed but we were trying to find a way to do this and I am sure this is going to help the Techs out!

Yeah, but you'll forget that soon enough and you'll smile every time you look at it.

Looks like a bit of black plastic as a filler panel would work in a pinch till you figure out something better.

I believe so, the correct fuel pump and sender for the tank is installed
Thanks for sharing this. I'm looking at doing just that.
few questions to clarify..please!
1. what is the "sender" you mentioned above?
2. did you have to make any other mods to the elec. wires? or was it just plug and play?

Thanks very much and below is a photoshop of 5G tank on my 18 street bob
