2000 Fatboy been running great----for years. But the other day it quit just like the ignition was switched off. Now runs for about 5-10 min, then shuts off just like key was turned off again. Wait another 5-10 min, fires up, go another 5 -10 min, same thing. Has new battery, lights and gauges good and bright. Any ideas, Im thinking bad VR because very warm to the rouch.

They do get warm normally. There is a large electrical section in the Mechanical area of the Forum with a lot of good diagnostic tips.
Also, check and clean your ignition switch if you haven't done so. Here is a link to how to do it.

Welcome. Try loosening the gas cap. Vent in it could be bad causing it to vacuum lock. Check fuel filter as well, could be plugged causing low flow.

Coil?

I don't know much about HD fuel systems but I would suspect an obstruction somewhere in the fuel line or needle valve. Carburetor bowl fills while it's not running but runs empty while running, killing the engine because the fuel feed isn't fast enough.

Coil was my first thought as well.

You should probably move this question over to the Softail forum. This forum is for the newest generation 2018+ Softails with the M8 motors.

Given that you're in high-humidity Florida and the bike is almost 20 years old, I'd be looking at ALL the electrical connections. Buy some DeoxIT contact cleaner
This is amazing stuff to cure problems with electrical corrosion. Unplug every plug, spray the contacts inside and plug, unplug, replug each connector. Unbolt anything that holds an electrical part and look for corrosion. Many things ground electrically through those bolts even though there's no wire there. Clean any corrosion, spray with DeoxIT and bolt back together. Do your switches, especially your Run switch on the right handlebar. All this may not cure your problem, but will still be excellent service for an older bike.

Compliment felt good. I've had all types of vehicles, mowers, ATVs, etc that displayed those symptoms. All degraded coils. Do some research and find the allowable resistance of a good coil and ohm it out to be sure b4 you blow $$$ on a new one. IDK about HD, but JD and alot of em are pricey. Good luck, let us know.
