FXLR Road Trip
Pros:
Milwaukee 8 - ran flawlessly and strong. Most days I was doing 80 or 85, never missed a beat. Going up some pretty steep grades into AZ at 85 mph was a breeze. Peak torque on 107 configured like mine is around 3050 rpm, which is almost a perfect match at 85 mph. Worst gas mileage of the trip was 40 mpg, best a tick over 50. Overall average was 44 mpg.
DK Customs highway peg mounts - a bit pricey but infinitely adjustable. Allowed for the more than occasional need to shift feet around but still retain the solid control afforded by mids. A winner for sure.
HD electronic cruise control - So good I consider it a necessity now. Rock solid in holding any speed, regardless of load. Worth every penny
Handling in the rain - Haven't felt this comfortable on a Harley in the rain since my last Road King. Rode through a couple of real gully washers in west Texas, never felt a loss of control
Cons
Tracking - For some reason my Low Rider pulls to the left, which is exacerbated by having a windshield. Significant enough that it was tiresome if only using one hand on the bars. Dealer claims everything is in alignment, but I have my doubts
Seat - I have the HD Sundowner seat. It's great for about 400 miles per day. After that, not so much
Neutral
HD Midsize windshield - coverage is just okay. Would really help if it was an inch or two wider on each side. Not enough of an issue to justify spending the cash for something different
Riding range - usually stopped for gas between 125-150 miles. Part of that is because I don't want to run out in the middle of BFE, but a 180-200 range would be ideal. Not worth the cludgy look of a bigger tank, though
Rain suit - Works best when you put it on BEFORE you get soaked. Haha. Don't ask
Overall impression is that while the LR is certainly not a Road King, it is hands down THE BEST non-touring bike for distance riding that I've ever owned. A set of decent saddlebags and a better seat are the only changes I'll make before the next trip. It's a winner!
