Stereo Upgrade 2010 FLHX
 

So i recently purchased the bike and I would like to upgrade the stereo a bit. I'm not a real audiophile so I really don't know what I need. Maybe I'm wrong, but can I just buy a nice set of upgraded speakers and get better sound and volume for cruising at highway speeds. I don't need a lot just enough to hear it at 70 mph without distorting.

Will a nice set of speakers work or do I need to upgrade the factory head unit with speakers also?

to be honest with you I think a lot of us have tried that. I would go with a aftermarket head unit a nice set of speakers and an amp you have a lot of options biketronics is my favorite a little pricey lifetime guaranteed and you can call Bill at BT and he will help you with everything you need.I'm sure a lot of other guys will chime in and give you a hand. The other thing that's nice about biketronics it's all plug and play.

Buy these components and you will be able to hear your stereo all day long at 70 MPH. Without a decent amp to push your speakers it's difficult to achieve.

This set up will work with your stock head unit.

This setup is soooooo tempting because of the $300 total invested vs. double that for the BT kit. Still making up my mind as well. Update us on what you pick up and what your thoughts are.

I say Biketronics for the win. I have the RF amp above with their 70.1"'s and a head unit. This system seriously rocks. But it all depends on your budget. I like the lifetime warranty of BT products. I ran Kappas in my last Road Glide and it sounded good but the BT speakers sound much better.

Sweet, this is probably the route I will go. I did not really want to replace the head unit.

How and where do you mount the Amp in this setup though?

Also would spending an extra $40 and going with the Polk MM651 speakers over the Kappas be worth it?

The amp will fit directly on top of the radio with industrial Velcro. I love the Polks but unfortunately there have been some reliability issues with the MM651's and I'm not sure they have the issue resolved yet. I would stay with the Infinity's. They sound very good with the PBR300X2 and I think you will be happy with that set up. That said, I do happen to have a reliable set of the MM651's sitting on my shelf If your are dead set on getting the polks. . . No worries I sell all my stuff cheap! lol. . .PM me if interested.

Thanks for the offer but I have once again found myself too hasty. I already placed the order through Amazon. I don't like Ebay. I went with the Polk's. The Infinity's just have a lower power rating at 75W RMS at 2 ohm and the Polks are 100W RMS when the amp will be putting out 150W RMS at 2 ohm. I'll just set the amp to about 75% power. Unfortunately I didn't see any reviews about the Polk's having issues so hopefully everything will work out. I read a lot of reviews from Harley owners loving the Polk's.

One thing I'm concerned about it I read a few reviews on the amp saying it got very hot and shut down from over-temp. I may try and set lower like 50% power just for some heat savings.

I just installed the PBR300X2 and Kappa’s. For the amount spent it’s a considerable upgrade in sound. I ended up replacing the head unit and Friday Im adding some tweeters to the fairing. If you give me a day or so I was planning on writing a review and adding some notes I learned along the way, where to save some bucks, comparing it to other systems I heard on bikes, setting gains, etc.

The good: It works, its not hard to install (once your read/follow the sticky), it sounds MUCH better than stock, it doesn’t break the bank.

I hear you brother. . . Not exactly sure where your info is coming from. Certainly not this forum. True. Harley owners love the Polks. But it is also true they have had severe quality problems in the last couple years. The PBR300X2 is good as advertised. It's a great amp and does not get hot unless you run into one that is defective. I know at least 50-100 guys running that amp. Just FYI in regard to the infinity's. They might be rated 75 watts RMS but they will take 150 watts plus all day every day. Ask me how I know. . .
