Default Rockford Fosgate & Infinite Reference?

Hey guys, I currently have 2013 Street Glide with a Sony MEX-GS810BH head unit, Hog Tunes Amp (the old 125 watts RMS/70x2 channel), and I have the Hog Tunes Speakers that came with the amp (75 watt / 2 Ohm speakers)

So I have a very good friend who is knowledgeable and has mentioned all the names that you guys mention in this forum....from Arc amp to JL, Hertz, etc speakers.

I also see the Rockford Fosgate PBR300x4 ($150 on amazon) mentioned alot and I see the Infinity Reference 6.5 ($70.00 on amazon) mentioned alot. While, I'm positive (from my buddy and reading here), these may not the the BMW of components, I do have a question.

1. Would I need a speaker adapter to mount these or will the 6.5 mount right up. Do I keep the factory grill covers?

2. And while I'm OK with doing most installs of stuff myself, would the RF amplifier installation kit ($149 on RF site) be a good purchase? I really plan to just velcro it to the top of my radio in place of my HT...but splicing wires is my concern. I'm brave...but cautiously brave and think this purchase may make things easier.

3. I'm also confused because, in my mind, I can just add the Infinity speakers to what I already have and be just fine --better than what I have.

I don't really have some low budget, but for what I want---I don't really need to spend alot more. Most of my buddies have nice systems that can be heard 2 miles away ---not really what I want. I just want a nice crisp sound--speakers that can handle a little bass and not be distorted.........and I can add speaker in the bags later since this is a 4 channel amp.

Any opinions?

1SG,

The PBR 300X4 is not what you want. It's just slightly more than juice than what you have now. Most folks run the PBR300X2 and Infinity "Kappa" 62.11i not Reference as the PBRX2 can push 150w at 2ohm (which the Kappas are).

You don't have to spend tons to get good sound and you're in the ball park. With your radio you won't need to splice a thing. Simply run power and ground wires to your battery and connect the amp via RCA to the radio.

Do you listen to FM? If you do, then your options are limited with regard to Amp and it's either the PBR or BT2180 that will guarantee you keep FM. There are other amps that for some cause loss in FM reception, for others not a bit. Four channel amps look at the:

Cerwin Vega B4
Power Acoustik RZ42000D

...and yes you need speaker adaptors for the 6.5's. You can probably get away with adding better speakers and using your amp --- but I think it will leave you wanting a tad more.

Or as you said. It doesn't have to be the BOSS KIT.

Rockford Fosgate PBR300x2 (Amazon.com)...Infinity Kappa 62.11 (Sonic Electonix), the 5.25 to 6.25 adapter rings (ebay-Eastern Performance).

Haze, I trust your recommendation and I did more searching and realized you were correct about Kappa(s) have great reviews. I ran this by my partner who is extremely knowledgable also and he says this was a great recommendation for what I'm looking for. I think that is key ...we all have our own desires. I'm sure others will chime in and say there is much better --but this is what I need. For anything stronger, I'll get in my Bimmer which has subwoofers factory installed under each seat and will chatter your teeth.

Thanks for the info man. I'm sure I'll be happy. Everything is supposed to be here by Thursday and Friday...I have a ride Saturday and may throw it in before then. If not --- no biggie as I have a ride from NC to New Orleans to Panama City, FL to Savannah, GA back to NC on the 24th. It's my annual week long mancation with 2 buddies. I'll def have it in by then.

I'll check back in once it's all installed because I think my next question is GAINS???? I have a cheap hog tunes and that was easy. I tend to do all research upfront so install is simple.

Polyfill!!! Look it up. You'll need a few sheets to wrap your speakers. U can get it at Walmart or amazon - polyester batting.

You'll be happy with this upgrade. You have a sweet radio to push this.

Gains - between 5 and 6. Leave it set to AP, All Pass.

Radio - HPF set to 80 slope 1 ( I think that's the setting for this sony).

Install is a breeze my man. Enjoy!!! Let us know how it turns out.
