Default Tuning Skills

Saw Gann. and Bates both mention refining there tuning skills in a different post. And that reminded me of a question I have had for a long time.

When you tune your set up what volume are you playing it when you are tweaking it?

That depends. You can tune it at the max undistorted volume but you'll need to crank down the bass frequencies a little to avoid blowing a speaker at a higher volume. Or... you can tune it at a lower volume and be able to crank in more bass... however, if you ever accidentally go above that volume you'll probably smoke a speaker or two. I know what volume I set while riding, which is a few clicks below the distortion point on my HU (Rushmore bike). I tuned my system at that level and marked the volume hash mark on the HU screen as a reminder.

I'll tune at mid volume to keep the ringing in my ears to a minimum, then turn it up to check and adjust as necessary.

I do most of my base line tuning in the mid range but it's based on the feedback and testing at the 50 mph volume and also the outer edge of the sandbox.

Point being, u don't need to sit and blow ur damn ear drums out while tuning but u do need to recognize the wheelhouse u r tuning to based on ur riding style and associated volume targets, while also protecting a clean tune at ur max undistorted target volume setting.

In an ideal world, I'd like to be riding and using a laptop at the same time. Thinking it might be a lil dangerous though.

What T said has served me well.

I've actually considering doing this... having my girlfriend on the back seat with my laptop connected and on her lap. We use the intercom so I could communicate to her what frequencies to turn up or down. After an hours ride, we'd have it dialed in perfectly! Hmm... it's thoughts like this that keep me up a night! LOL
