Are lower speaker pod grills universal?

From previous threads I have read it seems the 2 popular grills are the cvo grill or focal off ebay. My question is do those grills fit any 6.5 speaker, or only certain speakers I the lower pods?

I have a line on some used wdx, if the deal fell through.

Thanks
Alex

From what I can see the grills for the lowers are a little different than the ones used in other locations. Hopefully folks with more background than myself will chime in.

With my little project the speakers were the buggaboo, not the grills. I got a set of Fairing Factory lowers and the AD Designs speakers I ordered would not drop down flush. The fat basket hit the edge of the hole before it dropped down. Once I ground down the edges of the lower with a Dremel tool the speaker sat flush but the screw holes didn't line up because the holes in the speaker were "out" a little too far. I had a set of Infinity 6.5s I had ordered for my truck and they dropped in and lined up perfectly.

I gambled on a set of these off of EBay and they fit the speakers OK once the lowers were modified:

So I guess to answer your question "it depends". I was told the AD Designs would fit a standard dimension lower (the hole measurement on the Fairing Factory lower seemed to be the same size as the Harley CVO part) but found out after I ordered the speakers that the company had changed the design recently. Some users may have tried a certain part and found it to work but then the manufacturer made changes down the line and that part no longer fit.

I figure for $18 shipped those grills I listed off of EBay might be worth a gamble as a backup plan if you can't find anything else that someone could guarantee would fit.

I brought my lowers to test fit the speakers and they fit without the rubber trim piece around the outside of the magnet.

It seems like the center speaker sticks up a ways, which was my biggest concern for the grills and having clearance between the speaker and grill.

For the db motos you can use the DS 18 grills but you will need to trim the center of it out.

Philokc what did you use to trim out the inside?

Dremel tool worked great for me.

Stovetop that looks like the same issue I had with the new AD Cx621s. I just used a sanding wheel on a Dremel tool on the top of the hole like Philokc said to about 3/4" down. When the plastic got hot it clumped up a bit so when it did I just used my pocket knife to ream it out like when you cut a piece of EMT conduit. Once the speaker fit I then smoothed it out a bit with some sandpaper. Here is a pic of the finished pod:

I did discover that the screws that came with my grills seemed to be about a #6 size and the holes in the lowers seemed to be for about #8 screws, so I filled in the screw holes with Plas-T-Pair and re-drilled them for #6 screws when it dried.

Here is a pic of the final assembly with my latest favorite Chinese purchase (the grills):

Good luck.

Im sorry Stove. To grind the inside of the pods I used my drill and 1 of these then used the Dremel to do the final sanding.

Hoyt,

Are you saying you had to enlarge the opening to make your speakers fit, as in the diameter of the speaker was too large or did you remove material to make the speaker mount farther into the enclosure?

The moto speakers fit inside the opening, no grinding needed. My concern was the middle speaker that sticks out farther (not sure the technical word for it), and having clearance for a grill.

Pulling off the rubber piece on the outside of the magnet gave me enough room to align mounting holes for the speakers.

I think that middle speaker is called your coaxial tweeter. After seeing that profile pic of it I'm a bit concerned about it fitting under my RG fairing grills myself.
