Default Overwhelmed audio

i just got my first HD and it’s a 2011 Ultra Classic. Love the bike! It has a stock stereo and speakers. The sound quality sucks and I’d like to get a better sound but I am not trying to win a stereo competition. I have looked at all kinds of threads and sites at different speakers and amps. If money wasn’t an option I could just get a nice set up with out worrying about it. I am a disabled vet on a fixed income so I can’t drop a lot on a amp and some speakers. With all that said....can I get some recommendations on the best way to go without braking the bank but getting some better sound without the distortion? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Welcome Eric and thank you for your service.

The first thing most will need to know before giving any advice would be to ask for your budget. A dollar figure will allow them to give you a good shopping list. I have a 2010 UC and at first went with the following build:

WDX6 Motos in the batwing fairing from Spork Customs on Facebook: about $180
Metra 5 1/4" to 6 1/2" speaker adapters for Harley 06-13 batwing fairings: about $15
Hawg Wired grills: about $30
SoundStream PN4.1000d amp: about $150
Custom amp mounting bracket: about $50
AD Designs CX6 speakers for rear pods: about $279 direct
1/4" speaker spacer rings for rear pods to allow the ADs to seat: about $10
wires, cables, installation fluid, etc. Who knows, maybe $75?

So that comes to around $800. I devoted a tax return to it so I went with what I thought would be the most bang for the buck. You can shave a few hundred off just by going with cheaper speakers, but most around here will say that the Motos are hard to beat for what Spork charges for them.

This is just an example of what some folks spend. You can get by MUCH cheaper if you need to, just give the folks here a figure and they can give you a shopping list.

Hoyt, thanks for the info. I was looking at around $500. The tax return is a good idea. I might just have to put it off a couple months and try to save up. I’ll go checkout the Motos.

Shoot $500 would be easy for these guys to craft a build for you.

I seem to recall there are Infinity Kappas that work well for under a hundred a pair. Go with a cheap four channel amp and you are good to go well under that figure.

I didn't mean to scare you off I just wanted to throw a price out there for a complete overhaul.

Walmart.com and Amzon.com both have the Kappa 62.11i for $84 and some change for a pair. They have the new verision 62ix for like $119.90. I do not think the Kappas are water resistant where the WDX6motos are but a lot of people still use the Kappas.
And on paper, the Kappas have a better freq responce.

Cerwin Vega B54 amp, couple sets of the Kappas, and all the associated parts should put you right around your budget. All proven parts that will get you good sound. It's not the top of the line by any means, but it will do exactly what you're looking for.

Go with the Polk MM 652's (don't think you'll need spacer for these) in rear pods and forget about the grills and you will cut about $170 off the cost. You could also run them in the fairing but the Moto's are worth the extra $35 IMO.

Eric ANY of these suggestions these guys have given will be a HUGE improvement over the stock HD system.

To give you an idea of the difference I noticed I had already upgraded my speakers from the stock to the Harley Boom speakers at first. That was a slight improvement. The Motos and ADs were a tremendous improvement over the Boom setup.

That's why folks with experience tell newcomers to never mess with the Harley branded stuff. Cheap aftermarket junk will outplay it and decent quality aftermarket components will just plain blow it away.

If you decide to keep the stock head unit and get an amp, you'll need 2 PAC SNI-35 line out converters. If I can find them and you want them, private message me and you can have them for free.
