Default New HU advise 2009 EGC

Looking for advise on a new Head Unit. My Harmon Kardon in my 2009 Electra Glide Classic is about to go south. It’s been acting up for a few months but I would rather be proactive and replace it while I have time rather than rushing around to get something just so I can hear my tunes. I have already had a buddy re solder some internal wiring for the AUX plug.

I have an older Hoftunes amp and speaker setup (902.2 amp and 902.2 AA speakers). I would like to keep the Hogtunes amp but upgrade the speakers. I was looking at the Jensen HD1BT with their 6.5” speakers but it seems their out of stock in most locations. Don’t need to blow my ears off but I do ride two up most of the time and the wife loves to hear her music. My budget is about $700.

Thanks in advance.

There is a few options you have brother. You can send your HU to iron cross and have it rebuilt if you like to keep the stock look and function. You can go aftermarket Hu like sony or kenwood and still retain thumb control with a metra/soche control kit. For the speakers, you will need 5.25 to 6.5 adaptors and if you are determined on keeping that amp the you are limited to a 2 ohm speakers and my suggestion is a set of infinity kappas 62ix. That amp is 2ohm stable so only 2 ohm speakers will work properly and your amp is only rated at 40w rms @2 ohm. . You can upgrade the amp to a different amp and go different speakers that are 4 ohm that will provide a plethora of speaker choices

Here is the break down.
Iron Cross rebuild of your HU $250
Aftermarket HU with thumb control $150-225
Infinity kappas 62ix $150
Cerwin vega b-52 amp (a solid amp for 2 speakers) $140 (150w x2) much better amp from what you currently have. Quality speakers for that amp $150+.
5.25 to 6.5 metra speaker adaptors $15.

Just some food for thought.

I'm in a similar boat and thinking about a replacement HU only. I'm running a PBR 2 amp, & Hertz 6.5 speakers.

What model Sony (or other brands) have you liked? Thanx.

I'm looking into sending the HU to Iron Cross, I do like the original look and having all the hand control functions. I'll keep the Hogtunes amp for now and go with the Infinity kappas 62ix speakers. If the sound isn't what I want I'll upgrade the amps when $$ is available. Thanks.

As others have mentioned in other threads if you are going to send your head unit to Iron Cross go ahead and pay them to install preamp outputs for front and rear. That way your options for the future are greatly expanded. You will get cleaner sound with whatever amp you choose to use.

Just ordered a set of Infinity kappa 62ix from Cutchfield for $149.00. A set of HD speaker mounting brackets for the 5.25 to 6.5 speakers are included in the price. I'm keeping the Hogtunes amp and I hope to notice an improvement over the older Hogtunes speakers. In November I'll send the HU to Iron Cross for upgrades.
Thanks

You should notice a big difference with the speaker upgrade. Keep us posted with your results as others are in the same boat as you.
