Bypass settings for MMATS 601.4
 

Hey all,

I recently bought some 6.5" MMATS 601.4 speakers to put in my lower fairings. I have a set of Polk MM651's in the upper fairing. My question is this - for my crossover setting on the amp should I set it to "low pass" for the MMATS since they are a mid-bass speaker? I have the setting for the Polks in the upper fairing at "All pass" based on what I've read here.

I'm somewhat of a newbie and this is the first time I've had any speakers other than co-ax, or full-range. Any advice is appreciated.

BTW: Sony MEX-70BT Head Unit, PA RZ4-2000d amp, Polk Audio MM651's upper, MMATS 601.4's lower.

Low Pass is for SUBS. Set the crossover to HPF and set freqs at 100hz and adjust up or down accordingly.

You will want to use "high pass" for both sets. Yes it's a "mid bass" speaker, but not a sub. I would cross the MMATS around 90 on amp. I would cross your Polks around 80-90.
You can also run your amp on all pass and use the x.-over settings on your Sony HU to get a little more precise, but it will be for all 4 speakers.

hi pass for the mmats, experiment bewteen80-100 hz on the low end side with the amp crossover. if you can use your head unit you might be able to band pass them so they roll at 3-5khz on the high side, that is where i've found them to work real well.

I also set my Mmats to 5KHz on the top end and found that setting to sound a little warmer than leaving the upper end wide open.

If you don't have a way to cap off the upper end and would like to experiment without too much money Harrison Labs makes a set of FMODS that cap the highs at 6.5 KHz.

Thanks guys, for all the information and advice. I've been watching some Youtube vids trying to learn about crossovers and settings and so on. I've got the barest minimum of car stereo experience, and I can swap out speakers and head units with no problems, but setting up frequencies and so on is past what I know.

The amp I have allows only for HP/FP/LP and gain settings. So I guess I will have to set the crossover on the head unit. I remember scrolling through the option screens and seeing settings for that and not really knowing what to do with them. I'm guessing based on what I've read and watched that I would leave my amp settings on FP and set head unit to HP and crossover between 90hz and 100hz. I'm not sure I can set anything for the high side with my head unit but if I can I will follow your suggestions.

I do have EQ settings for slope and bands that I got from Gannicus in a different thread about settings for my head unit.

I don't know if it will help but I can tell you what I did originally. I set my amps filter at High Pass at 100Hz, which will play everything above it. I then set my DSP filter to allow everything below 5KHz. I left it this way because occasionally I would bypass the DSP for testing and didn't want to flood the speakers with frequencies they couldn't handle.

Depending on your head unit though I suspect your filter settings would apply to al channels so it may not be feasible to use the head unit for the upper end of the band pass. That was one reason why I originally went with the FMODS before I got my DSP. They could take care of the upper end on the Mmats only and the amp could take care of the lower end. I don't know if this would be the best situation for you though but it should work.

Maybe someone with experience tweaking your head unit can fill in the missing details.

I've never heard of these. I wonder if these caps would tone down the DB Drives I have a bit as they scream loud right now but I cant tune much lower end into them without distortion from the arc 150.4

I've used FMODS for years. I don't know if they are right in every situation, but if you want a cheap way to take out some of the highs you could use one of their crossovers. If you just wanted to reduce the signal a little bit one of their attenuators might be worth a try. Here is the link to their attenuators page:
