Simple answer, and more applicable to your question, yes: get a tuner, plug it in and you can transfer the service off the HD module's Radio ID to the new tuner's Radio ID. Simple. And with the new tuner, you're going to get 3 months free service. That's about the riding season here in Upstate NY!
I had one in my pickup on a JVC head unit, and it worked perfectly fine. I had the SXV200 on my '11 Street Glide for a while when I was running the Jensen HD1BT head unit on that bike, and again, it worked very well.

On my '11 Street Glide, yes. I had a plate (the one that was stock for the Boom! XM add-on module for the HK radio) that put the antenna above the speaker on the clutch side, and that worked out pretty well. You can see the pre-Rushmore antenna mount plate on the clutch side of the inner fairing, and the big "bow" of antenna wire is on the brake side of the inner, by the gauges. (The white stuff is polyfill batting wrapped around the BT7P1 speakers if you're wondering!)
On my current bike, a 2015 Ultra Limited, I have the SXM module installed in the BoomBox. I have the Boom! XM Antenna on the top of the fairing, and used a round file to cut a groove into the edge of the fairing to run the wire. There are pics of how others have done this in other SXM module threads. I'm swapping out my BoomBox for the Sony as well, and I'll just mount the antenna in the same location when I connect my SXV300V1. I'd have to think the antenna wire from the SiriusXM tuner will actually be a bit thinner than the Boom antenna, although there's a TON of antenna wire to secure somewhere with the SXM kit; it's generally intended for cars/trucks, so the wire usually has much longer to travel.

Got a tidbit of news: Biketronics got their new shipment of Sony XAV-AX5000 units in, and due to a delay in building BT 4180s, they started on the "Turnkey Rushmore Radio" kits. Mine ships Monday (I was told when I ordered that they were waiting on head units, and my kit would be prepped NEXT weekend)!! I already have the SiriusXM SXV300V1 kit sitting here (I purchased one of the ones I linked above), so by next weekend I will have it all put together. If nothing else, I can take a couple pics of the install of the setup on my 2015 Ultra.

I asked about that myself. Donna stated all you have to do is remove the back cover (take all the screws out) and I think the area under the tape at the lower left side is where you'll find a place you can run the XM connection through the plate, make the connection then screw the plate back on. She said it would be pretty easy, just a lot of screws in the back.

I want to say there’s a mail in rebate on the tuner right now that will basically make it free when you subscribe.
The SiriusXM app is ACP/AA compatible. I know you said you lose reception in the hills. Just hear me out on this. How often do you ride the bike? How often are you in the hills? For me, I couldn’t justify adding service to the bike so I added streaming for $5 a month versus double that for xm select. I just don’t ride as often as I use to.
Not it trying to deter you from getting it. Just something to think about. Love having it in my car for long trips.
