I still can't believe it: Not all watts are treated equally
So last night I went to swap out amps for a guy who contacted me because he wasn't happy with his $2K system installed by a car/boat audio place. He told me he had them install 2 sets of JL M 6.5's (lids and lowers) and 1 set of some JL 6.5 in speaker pods (2015 Street Glide with stock HU, 4-0 flash, no LL) and all 6 speakers ran off a JL MX280/4. Fronts and lowers wired parallel on channel 1/2 and rears off of 3/4. When he told what amp, I said: well there's your problem, you need more watts. So after talking, I had him order up a Stinger amp to install.
I get to house and start tearing shix apart. Then I decided I should hear what his system sounded like. I was shocked, to say the least. It actually sounded pretty damn good. I adjusted some gains and cross-overs and showed him what it sounds like with good quality music (Amazon prime music and iHeart). It then sounded even better. He was impressed. I ended up telling him that I really didn't think swamping amps would make that much a difference (I never thought I would say that) and that he can only get so much sound out of 6.5' speakers. Between the cost of amp, supplies and my labor, I honestly didn't' think he would be happy. So now he's going to upgrade his HU instead of swapping amps. So as debating on this forum, not all watts can be treated equally! |
Yep, wait till he sends some good voltage to the JL amp. It should sing.

He doesn't sound cheap to me. All that JL gear is not cheap.

And best of all, you made a customer for life and the referrals will be overwhelming

Ok CShocker, we are still waiting for the punch line man!!!!
Those speakers are being severely neglected with the low wattage being sent to those speakers. Luv, T |

I have high hopes T.... I'm gonna take out the 1200 watts I'm running and install 2 of the 280's. That'll free up some room and my JL's should just pound.

I would've used both amps. I only use the JL 280/4 to power tweeter. Last time I used it one bridged to a set of 6.5's it wasn't enough --- and I've been TeamJL for a very very long time. Still am!

Don't send that other amp back Shocker. If u run it the way it is currently set up with the high demand that will be placed on it, the amp will fry in no time. I luv that little amp for the right application but when it gets loaded up a bit, it will overheat and die.
I have gone thru 2 of them thus would never put anything but 6.5s on it bridged. Horns OR efficient 6.5s is its wheel house. T |
