budget upgrade, opinions?
 

Ive been planning to upgrade my ultras stereo for a while, but have not been able to decide on speakers. Keep in mind Im in Canada so prices are about 80% higher, so budgeting is a little tougher. I don't want to spend more than $600 Canadian. Here is what I have come up with:
6.5" Alpine sps-610c in the fairing,
6.5" Alpine sps-610 in the front lowers,
6.5" infinity 6291 in the back pods,
soundstream pn4.520d amp,
I plan on running the amp at 2 ohms and run the front 4 ohm speakers in parallel and the back speakers are 2 ohm.
Do you think this combo will be good sound value?

Can't comment on how the speakers will sound because I have never heard them, but I am running the same amp as you will be, and I have the speakers set up the same way you are planning.

My observations are:

You will have to adjust the fade to the front because you will hear more sound coming from behind you at speed.

You will lose just about all of your FM and WB reception, so I hope those aren't important to you.

Check the specifications on the speakers you will be putting into the tour pak pods. Not a lot of aftermarket speakers fit, especially if they have large magnets.

You will need to run new speaker wires to the tour pak pods. The stock wires are not heavy enough.

All of your amp and speaker wiring is easier done with the tank removed. If you go this route, try to get the tank as empty as possible before you remove it.

Did you run the wire for the lowers in the crash bar or under it?

Under it, but when I redo everything this winter, I'm going to drill and run inside the bars. IMO, it looks unfinished when you can see the wiring.

What makes you say the stock wiring to the rear pods isn't sufficient? Did my polks in the rears with the stock wiring...those wires aren't going to create enough impedance to matter...

Stock speaker wiring is around 20/22 gage. The Soundstream puts out 130 watts at 2 ohms. The stock wiring will choke the signal and overheat conducting that amount of power. Harley put the bare minimum into the wiring harness and never planned on people doing what we do.

You might have something here. A 20ga wire @ 2ohms should be run a max of 5 feet.

Thanks for your comments, hope to hear some more. Now I need to find some good quality black speaker wire so it blends in with the frame.

Checked into this. Stock is 18ga. More than sufficient to power aftermarket speakers. Keep in mind these amps aren't pushing max wattage to the speakers continuously.

I don't remember it being 18 gage when I did my pods, but I'll take your word for it. I used the stock wiring to the rear pods for the tweeters on my Polk's. That way I could leave the crossovers in the fairing.

Personally, I'd rather have 14-16 gage, but everybody has their own opinions. Wiring is like a garden hose. The more volume that the wiring can handle, the better.
