Sturgis 17 ?
#53
I'm late chiming in here, but I went to Sturgis for the first time this year. We went for the last 3 days. I went with a group of four others, two of which had been to Sturgis many times. This was helpful, they knew all the places to go. We camped about 20 miles from Sturgis, I hadn't slept in a tent for over 20 years but it was fine (bring an air mattress).
We went to Sturgis itself several times, but only for a couple of hours at a time, and rode around all day every day. Each of the little towns in the area are as much a part of the rally as Sturgis itself. We also went to the massive HD dealership in Rapid City, the parking lot was loaded with as many vendors or maybe more than were at Sturgis.
It's true the numbers were down this year, which I preferred, they say don't go in the anniversary years (0's and 5's) if you want to avoid the busier years. There were still bikes everywhere, but it wasn't too congested to get around. Police were parked at the edge of just about every town, slowing down as you approach a town is a must if you don't want to get ticketed.
I would go back, thinking if I do I would try camping at Buffalo Chip. That way you are camping right where the festivities are, so you don't have to ride back to your campsite, etc.

I went and had a great time ! Just got home today, exhausted ! I took 4 days going down and 4 coming back and used 'Airbnb' for overnight accomodation. Very cheap compared to hotel/motel and at least you can expect a clean bed ! I wouldn't ride down again but would trailer it. All in all a great experience and a bucket list check off !...b.
