Default Ontario to Alberta

I am planning to ride from Ontario to Alberta (Edmonton eventually). Was wondering the best route from Winnipeg. Would I be better to head directly to Edmonton or to Calgary first.
Guess i am asking about available motels and gas etc along the way
Any input would be greatly appreciated
Thx

If I was making this trip I'd stay on #1 to Regina then head to Saskatoon on 11 then take 16 from Saskatoon to Edmonton.

Forgot to say you'll have no problem finding gas or lodging in the Prairie's as long as you do a little planning.

That the way I would go. The #1 west of Regina to Calgary is deadly. You'll fall asleep from boredom and drive off the road.

You could get off the #1 just past Portage la Prairie and take the 16 all the way to Edmonton. I have used that route too many times to remember over the years. Lots of places to gas up, nice mom and pop diners and restaurants to eat at and lots of descent hotels/motels to stay at along the way. Roads are in good shape and there is enough variation of scenery so you don't go brain numb from boredom. Just my two cents worth.

I'm from NS and have been through there both ways a couple of times. I just let the weather decide for me (avoid thunderstorms and especially potential hailstorms ... No Cover!). No problem finding gas, motels or even dealerships. Personally, I take the secondary roads when possible although I am never on a timetable. Only thing you'll notice is lots of sand and gravel on most major highways. If you need any specific advice, just ask.

Save yourself the temptation of suicide, take the southern US route, you can thank me later.

For sure, I did twice on the outbound trips through the northern states just to avoid the weather.

Hey guys, just want to say thanks for the input! Did the ride using both highways; 1 out & 1back.
Beautiful but you were dead on about the weather. Some cold and windy thru Saskatchewan going out and cold and wet coming back thru Manitoba and northern Ontario. Too much time wasted getting out and back. Next time I think I’ll have the bike shipped to Calgary or ... somewhere (would rather have the time to ride out there)
