cv 99D, 190/45 with open pipes was backfiring big-time, so I decided to rebuild the carb.

QUESTIONS:
what should the jetting and air mix be for a 05 road king custom with a
cv 99b carb and open pipes?
do the 99 series cv carbs tend to backfire?
should i just be happy that the new carb only backfires once every full tank and not every ten minutes.:icon_nut:

THE FUN PART:
what happen when i worked on carb.
i was told to put 50 jet in carb, do to the backfiring. at that time, decided to rebuild carb. well, i broke the float pin holder. cost me 250 for a used rebuilt 99B carb, jetted 190/45. the new rebuilt 99B worked great, idle seemed a little low. back fired once, dum as i am, i put the 50 jet with air mix 3 3/4. now it smells like gas. plugs smell of gas, one plug was black other white and backfired once coming off freeway.

thinking of getting a 48 jet, or putting back in the 45.
still dont know what air mix would be.

any thoughts would be great,
stoney

I had a kn filter and open pipes on my fxst and I believe I started out with a 48 and went up to a 50..i don't remember any of the other specifics. I'm sure I drilled out the slide and changed the clip location on the needle but not sure what spot.. I don't remember having much if any popping

thanks decencyxdefied, guess i could keep turning up the air mix and see what happens.

well, decided to read what people posted on this site. duh, thanks.

Start with a 48 slow jet but have a 50 on hand (the 48 should either minimize or stop the backfiring on deceleration). Also adjust the idle air screw underneath the carb and see if you end up at about 2.5-3.0 turns out which is an indicator that your slow jet is on the mark. Keep the 190 main for now as it has to be fairly close to the final value.

well, went to someone who knew what they where doing.
so with this cv 99b carb, i put 50/190 jets and put the air mix to one and a quarter turn out.
bike has never ran better.
thanks for all the help.

good outcome...You could even drop back to a 48 and wind the air mix out a bit more (same thing really)
