Default 90 FXR Carb Will Not Stop Leaking

So my 90 FXRP decided about a month ago to start leaking out of the carb overflow after I cleaned the carb after getting some bad gas. I have rebuilt this carb probably a dozen times over the years and never had an issue until this time. It acts as if the needle doesn't want to seat but I have replaced it with 3 new needles and tonight even tried the old trick of polishing the seat with toothpaste and a Q-tip to no avail. Im lost on where to go from here. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, DJ

There are different designs of float valves. I would try to get the OEM one for your ride, it should work just fine...and make sure that your float is adjusted correctly. If the float is not fully seating the valve, it will leak.

I had a similar problem with a CV-44...I also tried three different valves before finally figuring out that the standard kit float valve would not seat so I had to go with an OEM version that cost as much as the kit.

I always try and avoid the aftermarket needles, they tend to be zinc or chrome plated and I've had many deteriorate and cause issues. They also tend to use a little rubber tip to make up for the poor mating surfaces. The OEM needles and seats cost more but are well worth it. Always use the proper seat for the needle, never mix and match!

When I have one that is a stubborn leaker, and I have remedied all other issues, I have a needle welded to a piece of bar stock. I put a bit of lapping compound on the needle and lap it just like a valve. It usually works. If not, the seat is rotted out anyway.

Yea OEM is best. I once used an aftermarket aluminum needle and seat and that leaked as well. Went back to OEM and problem was gone...
