95 kit and mikuni 42 tuning

Just got my 95 kit installed....

SE flat tops
Andrews 37 cams
06 heads at 80 cc’s
Running about 190 psi, 9.85 static compression
Big sucker air cleaner and rb racing black hole 2-into-1 exhaust
Altitude is at sea level.

Looking for starting point for my mikuni 42.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

As it’s shipped is a good starting point. Use the Mikuni tuning manual to tune.

I have 95" displacement & I set my carb up with Joe Minton kit.My bike has a new personality now.Very crisp it has a ton of torque available. Bike actually runs cooler now by 10-15 degrees with the carb set up now.

My acl pump noz down from a 70 to a 50 now, pilot is 17.5 , also tried a 20.5 on pilot and it was still a bit rich, dropped 17.5 in with the leaner needle to a 98 needle(stock is 97 needle). Main is 165 which it came with as OEM. Try that and see where it takes yu.I have street cams .510. They are Dave Mackie cams, I opted them because I have a 5 speed and they have a very wide center line which pulls almost to redline. I also dropped in a 34T trans pulley from a 32 T version and I now have a great running bike getting close to 46 miles to the gallon @68.6 mph, reving 2400 (aprox) rpm. Thats what I wanted and it would not be possible with out Joe Minton kit and his expertise on the Mikuni (42mm). He supposedly wrote the tuning manual too. Bike has the usual done to intake with a free flowing A/C and a set of V&H side shots with a small H chamber in their make up. Good luck and let us know how and what worked for you.

heres is good article by Joe Minton engineer for Mikuni and engine builder:https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%...213272&o=OneUp

22.5 slow jet, 165 main, needle in stock slot, air screw 1.5 turns out,,,,run it make idle mix and accel pump adjustments and see if you need anything else from there.

A GREAT starting point is 25 pilot , and a 160 main, clip in the middle.
That jetting, will cover a boat-load of territory.

Dragging up an old thread but I thought it would be worth posting my findings.
some fought specs about my build:
2001 FXDX
95”
Andrews 26G Cam
SE flat tops
9.6:1 CR (I think)
Street Port Plus headwork (on 06 heads carried out by Fastlane headwork)
mikuni HSR 42 (actually a SE but they are the same)
Bassani RR3 pipe
S&S Teardrop air cleaner
AFR gauge in front pipe

At the time of the test the temp was approx 8°C (47 f) a nice dry autumn morning in Edinburgh
Average altitude was 70m (230ft)

pilot jet 27.5
air fuel screw out 3 turns
97 Needle with clip in 2nd from top
main jet 160
AP 50

I was averaging around 13.6 through most of the first half throttle (except during AP use)
went from 13.6 and dropped over the last half throttle until WOT. This was the most difficult part to read because the acceleration and revs shooting up rapidly.
WOT I felt was a touch rich at 11. I’ll look to change the main jet down a size to 157.5

I think that about covers it. Feel free to ask any questions.
