Default New to carbs

Hey guys, I have a '95 FXSTC. I have had it a few months, and put about 2k miles on it. It has run really well so far.

Today was riding, and as I was coasting off of an exit ramp it died. Couldn't get it to restart... pushed it up the ramp and into a parking lot. Could smell fuel... finally got it to start, but it kept choking as if it wasn't getting good air/fuel. Had to hold the throttle open to keep it from dying, then my brother (riding with me) tells me he can see fuel leaking onto my engine from the right side. I pull into another parking lot, and I have fuel leaking from the air filter. I pull the filter and check the carb, it is inplace, but when I start it I have fuel leaking out of the mouth (whatever you call it) of the carb. I managed to get it home (like 3 miles).

I am planning to buy a rebuild kit and just work it over for the sake of doing it. But is there something else I should be worried about?

Also, why is there so much variance in the different rebuild kits? I see some on DennisKirk.com etc for like $20, but Harley wants $45 for theirs, and I see some "genuine James" kits for $40+ also. Is there value in these higher end kits?

Thanks guys!

M

Sounds like your needle and seat are leaking and/or you have a heavy float. I would suspect the needle and seat first if it has been sitting. It's not leaking with the engine off so your vacuum petcock is most likely functioning properly.

If it's leaking that much it will wash the rings and dilute the oil so get the carb off and rebuild it.

Petcock is brand new. I wasn't as worried about the oil diluting as I was my engine catching on fire from gas dripping onto my pipes.
