Default Getting Close to solving my carb

  • I've been dealing with this carb for months. Long story short 1997 Dyna Wide Glide, Vance & Hines shorties, Arlen Ness stage 2 big sucker standard CV carb with 45 pilot 190 main jet, needle shimmed .050 and about two turns out on my air fuel mixture screw. My problem is that as soon as I get down to close the choke the bike starts popping, snapping, sneezing etc when I hit the throttle a little. If I have the choke open even 25% everything is fine.
  • New rebuilt carb with all new jets, vacuum piston and new choke cable. Also new plugs, wires, Battery, and brand new voltage regulator

I would go back and check the intake manifold seals and carb to intake manifold seal ring. And I quote from the below we page "Again it should be emphasized, the #1 cause of carburetor related problems on a Harley or other V-Twin motorcycle is VACUUM LEAKS. The CV carb is dependent upon vacuum to function properly."

Very good troubleshooting and tuning information here: https://cv-performance.com/harley-cv...-tuning-issues

Ive replaced the intake flanges and gaskets. I used carb cleaner spray around the flanges . No change in rpm. I have replaced petcock. All fuel hoses. Have not done anything with the VOES just because I dont know how to single that out. The slide goes up and down with no problem, as far as I can see. I had the inclination to replace the VOES but I just didnt see any malfunction to warrant it

Could be worth checking the VOES? Read here: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/engin...plained-2.html

Open the mixture screw 1/8 turn out, ccw at a time until it clears up. If it doesn't throw in a #46 pilot start at 2 turns and repeat.

I switched from a 46 back to the 45 because I could turn the screw in until seat and it didn't stumble the engine. I thought that meant that that particular jet is too big if that was the case. Also with the 46 my plugs were jet black

this might sound like a dumb question, but is your accelerator pump working? can you see it squirt fuel into the bore when you twist the throttle?have you fully removed the idle mixture screw and confirmed that the pointy end is not damaged? maybe sometime in the past the screw got seated to hard, if so it could have damaged the seat in the carb, which could account for the symptons. normally i would have made the same recommendation that IT1 posted up.

Yup. Accelerator pump def squirting fuel. I actually tore (or it was already) the gasket taking out the screw to inspect it. Im pretty sure Ive ruled out the incorrect assembly of the carb as a culprit.

After trying to adjust the mixture screw, I would verify steps 2 & 3 in the CV performance link above.

Is the idle mixture screw in the rear of the carb? If so it regulates fuel not air. 3 turns out it's not uncommon. Also are you sure the o-ring for the idle mixture screw is in there? If not it could suck air there where it's not supposed to.
