Default 2014 iron modified air intake / filter system

Hello--

a noob here-- just bought a 2014 iron 883 last october for commute purposes. i live in Oakland, CA and do the mostly freeway 10 mile one way commute into SF 4 times a week.

anyway, the first owner did a bunch of modifications (i bought from the second owner, who owned it for a year and put 200 miles) to make it more 'bare', and i just realized that i don't have an air intake / filter system. I mean i have air intake but it's a piece of metal mesh and nothing else (see pics).

it seems like it needs to be covered absolutely in rainy situations. is this okay? what are implications for this? should i be worried or change it back?

any comments or tips are welcome. thank you!

Wink

That is a silly thing to have done IMHO, so you would be wise to consider installing a proper air filter. There are countless options of those available, from H-D or the aftermarket. I recommend you visit the Sportster section, where you will get tons of advice and alternative suggestions. I suspect you will also need some genuine Harley parts, as the PO seems to have thrown away a lot of parts you may need - unless he gave you a box of take-offs. You may find a parts website helpful, in checking what your bike had when new.

and this is a quick and easy fix. like was mentioned look at the HD stuff first. you can spend a fortune on an air cleaner. most are cosmetic.
