Help! Main Jet missing! Is this even possible?
Hi,
Just spent the weekend helping my son put new bars on his 2002 FXD. We fired it up to test our wiring and when we shut it down, fuel started coming out of the air cleaner. Shut off the petcock, removed the air cleaner, gave the bowl a few taps and tried again, still leaks. I ran to town and he pulled the carb and bowl cover. I went out to look at it later and there is no main jet in the holder. He says he did not remove anything and did not notice anything fall out when he opened it up. Is this even possible? Can it run without one? I am pretty mechanical but form some reason, carburetors have always intimidated me. I will go out to the shop and look again in the morning but just wondering if the bike should even run without one.
Thanks!
P.S.
Any tips for a rookie rebuilding a CV carb would be appreciated.

You can see an exploded diagram of your carb on a parts website, along with lots of other interesting stuff! A tip? Buy a carb rebuild kit, which will include all the perishable parts and enable you to rebuild it like new.
As for the missing main jet I can't imagine a bike running right without one, though it may be possible (never tried it!).

I had a four cylinder jap bike with CV carbs that dropped a main jet one time. The main jet circuit does not kick in until the rpms goe up. It is possible for it to idle fine because it is using the idle circuit for low rpms. When you open the throttle it should be evident. Don't be intimidated it really is very easy especially with only one carb. Good luck

Don't let carbs scare you! -
Genius as they may be, they are just different size holes getting gas sucked out of them.,
Ventures.
I am not sure why the float would be leaking ...
But if your jet is missing.put one in.
I have no clue HOW it could run without a MJ
It might idle OK.
Where it maybe?
No clue either as i don't know of a way out of there.
