Does anybody know if this tab perform any function, is it some kind of structual gusset or something?




Or is in mainly to used to stretch out the air filter and prevent a good seal all the way around?



Because if it's nothing more than a pain in the *** I'd really like to grind it the phak off.

 

as for sealing, i doubt it has any effect on it, these cleaners have been around eons and sold tons of them.
the primary function of that tab is to make installation easier. when you push the round filter onto the backing plate, it causes it to tear drop shape and this acts as a holding tab so you do not have to fumble with the element while installing the cover.
but hey man, your plate, cut if you wish.

 

I have been cutting them out for years with no issues.
