actually wood is a very resourceful material.
submarines used wood as propeller shaft bearings.
wood is used to make proto-type manifolds. years back, they made a 750 cu/in engine and there was no manifold that would fit so a wood one was made and it turned in a massive amount power numbers, wish i could recall the hot rod article.
in japan, they use bamboo scaffolding and way better than steel.

Wood Performance CV's are awesome carbs, I've had one on my '94 for over 15 years and never had a problem with it, I never have to diddle with it to get it to run right. Take a look at their web page with the dyno runs to get an idea of the numbers you might expect based on what others have pulled. http://www.woodcarbs.com/dynoruns.htm.
My EVO is .010 over built from the flywheel up with mid-upper 80's Hp and low 90's Tq, The fuel economy is outstanding, consistently in the mid 40's and into the 50's in higher elevations. I get better performance than most 88" and some 96" bikes I ride with and better economy than all of them. Performance wise I couldn't ask for better response, there's very little flutter in the curves, just smooth power. I wouldn't hesitate to pop for one again - Bob Wood knows Harleys.
Here's testimony regarding how fast my bike goes with the Wood CV Carb
