Fuel Valve/Petcock Question

While in the process of removing the fuel tank from my '03 Wideglide, I was attempting to remove the hose from the fuel valve/petcock. I removed the hose clamp and was twisting the hose to break it loose from the fitting when the brass fitting came completely out of the petcock. Does this mean I need a whole new valve/petcock? I finished the job I was working on and put everything back together pushing the fitting back inside the petcock added a little fuel and fired it up with no leaks. I ran the bike for about 10 mins. and then took it for a short ride (1/4 mile maybe), but am not confident that it won't come out a pour fuel onto the engine and turn me into the "goast rider".

Any help would be appreciated.

Gonna go ahead and replace the valve assembly. Anyone else seen this issue?

Haven't seen that happen before but it is probably a good call on just replacing the fuel valve completely.

It happened to me too... about 6 months ago... I replaced the valve... don't need any fuel leaks...

When I got the new valve I disabled the vacuum operated diaphragm as I had a problem with it once shutting off my fuel (in the middle of Wyoming) when the vacuum line somehow came off the carb...

One of the mechanics at the local Harley shop says that he has had this happen to him several times. He said that he simply pushes the fitting/nipple back into the valve opening and attaches the hose with no problems.

save your money and ride no leaks will start. If it did leak she would of started as the bike started

had this happen to me, as well.

Tube came out with the fuel line.

Replaced the petcock with a gravity flow.

Find a new wrench. It will come out just as fast as he pushes it back in. Come on , does that even sound half-way right to you? I hope you're not 100 miles, or even 1, when it happens again.

If it makes any difference, I just replaced the petcock on my '04 Sportster and the factory replacement unit was only $25
