1976 fxe electrical/ charging?

I posted a few months back about a bike I picked up. I have since got I running and have it road worthy. I have a head scratcher with the electrical system. I installed a new agm battery in it when I got it running. Two weeks ago I left the house got about 5 miles and it quit as I was going down the road. No light no nothing. Was like it didn’t even have a battery in it. Got it home. Tried to charge the battery but it wouldn’t charge. When the charger cycled on the lights would come on and when it cycled off the would turn off. So it was just parasiting off the charger. Took the battery out charged it and wound up with 10v. Took it back got another one. It fired right up. Checked the charging and it was putting out 15-16 volts. Well I thought I cooked the 1st battery
I ordered a cycle electric regulator and put it on. New regulator putting out 12.89 at idle and 13.8 when it’s revved up. Thought it was fixed. Today I got two miles down the road and same thing! Just rolling down the road and it just quit. I guess there’s not even enough juice to fire the coils. So today I just pulled the battery out along the road and took it to the auto parts , put in the new one and I fired right up. So tonight I checked it again. 13.5 volts charging at the battery. I tested the alternator like the book says. Two pins coming out of crankcase: pins to ground read nothing so no shorts. Also pin to pin was .02. Book said .02-.04 was good. Also checked a/c voltage coming out of alternator was like 30 v.
Havent checked amps because I need a carbon Pyle load? Or can I do it without.

My my question is with a new battery and regulator could the alternator be intermittently doing something funny. Or would a intermittent short cook the battery?

Thanks zeb

you could have a stator magnet that has been broken up by the stator support and you will see it charge But it climes very slow to the top voltage and never makes it to 14.2

what is going on when it running is the 2 pols are connecting each other and discharging the battery in reverse instead of charging it

not written in stone but a guess as to what could be going on as I have seen that this past week

Ok. I appreciate the response. I am going to order a stator and go that route.

TAKE IT APART FIRST

if it was in the shop that a no brainer but to just buy parts that guessing against spending money

The old stator is male. The replacement is female. The box says 81-88. Mine is a 76. The mechanic at the Indy said it would work. I’m usually against rigging stuff. Would you use it and just put pins in it ?

it will work with a different 81 to 88 voltage regulator - the original one in your bike wont as the plugs are different, and its not because they got a deal on male pins
