New Harley Davidson Custom 1250cc engine
No one seems to be talking about the new 1250cc completely water cooled engine with an common sump transmission that will power the new 2020 Pan America, Custom and Sport model Harleys.
It appears to be devoid of cooling fins, has 1250cc with a 60 degree angle between cylinders. Pictures also indicate dual overhead cams and a common sump like todays other motorcycle engines but unlike traditional HD engines that have a separately lubricated and manufactured transmission. In a common sump transmission the engine and transmission share the same external casting. Also noteworthy is how the engine is attached. On all the 2020 models shown, the engine is a stressed member and attached to what looks like a trellis steel half frame. Steel perimeter frames, used on every HD until now, are not used. To me this looks like a blueprint for all sportster models going forward.
I would speculate this is more in line with modern VTwin designs from KTM and Ducati than any connection to designs like the Milwaukee 8. That means lots of HP (< 120 hp and probably double that of the much larger Milwaukee 8), high revving (by HD standards) of 9-10K rpm, and lightweight. It probably also means that very large displacement, slow turning engines like the Milwaukee 8, don't represent where the company is heading.
