I think it would work, just need to use the wheel spacers from the bike, not the older wheel.
Up to a couple of years ago I had a 1989 Softail solid rear wheel on my 1997 Wide Glide. Then I upgraded to 4 piston brakes by switching to a 2000 and up swing arm, still used the same wheel from '89. Again every time I used the spacers that were appropriate to the swing arm.
Same bike currently has 2000 and up lowers again for the four piston calipers. Running the stock 1997 wheel, using the 2000 and up wheel spacers. Front and back I went with polished Russel brake rotors, been setup like this for well over 10 years never had a problem.
Can not remember, but I am 99% positive I am still using the original 1997 axles front and back. Just year correct wheel spacers.
