Dyna Fwds to Mids Mod

Thought I would start my fwds to mids mod today so I am starting this thread for anybody thinking about doing this or others to chime in with tips and suggestions.

Grew up on dirt bikes and bought this Fat Bob as more of a "bar hopper" bike than a "cruiser" so have always wanted to go to mids to gain more comfort and control when out on my shorter and "spirited" type rides.

My first step in this projectwas to find some Dyna mid controls. I found just what I wanted on Ebay for $150 on some 2015 take offs done at a HD Dealership:

The rest of the parts I bought from Surdyke.com and all the new gaskets/bolts from my local HD shop:

Here is my parts list for getting this mod completed, I figure this mod will cost me about $550 total:

So to get started I went out for a ride and came back to drain out my primary. Been running ATF fluid in there(as per instructions from my +1 Alto Carbonite kit) so I will need to check on my compensator as I proceed on. Found a small amount of metal on my drain plug but nothing unusal.

So took my primary cover off(be sure to have plenty of rags ready underneath:icon_emm:) and took this pic to show the tunnel where the mid controls shifter linkage will go through. The hole is plugged from the factory but several other posters have said it is only plastic and easy to drill out with a 1/2" bit:

Awesome, looking forward to another great thread and pics!

Definitely easier (and cheaper), going from mids to forwards :)

Thanks Rob, yeah anytime you have to pull the inner primary it is a bit of a pain!

Loosened the clutch locknut and got my snap-ring pliers out(I really need a better set :icon_sad:) and removed the retaining ring holding the clutch release plate in place:

Pull out the release plate:

Now using the primary locking tool I can remove the clutch hub mainshaft nut(left handed!!) and the compensator bolt(throw away bolt and $$!):

Ok, making some progress:

Before you can pull the inner primary, you need too remove the battery, battery box and the 2 starter mounting bolts. These bolts are torqued at 25-27 ft-lbs and can be buggered up easily if not careful. Using a ball end Allen extension as in the pic is not a good idea(dont ask :icon_doh:) just not enough contact. So a straight end Allen is the ticket but when going for the aft bolt the socket part kept hitting on a ridge area on the starter and would not allow a good connection. So I had to ask "What would soft 02 do?" :icon_crackup:

So I took that Allen socket to the grinder and ground down the outside edge of the socket and now a good connection is possible! :icon_clapclap:

Good luck Allen. Looking forward to seeing the comp.

Thanks HD Bobber, should feel a lot better in the turns!

Taped up the mainshaft clutch hub splines to protect them and the inner primary oil seal. Removed the 5 inner primary sealing bolts and removed the inner primary being carefull with where the starter goes through.

Kinda looks like there was a small seepage from where the starter goes through the backside of the inner primary. I always install a new starter o-ring but looks like a small leak to me:

I got a question for anybody with an answer: The first time I took my inner primary off(this is my third time) I noticed a white lubricant around the shiny metal part of the starter just inboard of the starter o-ring that sits inside the inner primary. The HD SM does not mention it but I think it would be nice to put some more on because I have wiped that area because it was somewhat dirty. What is that lubricant, some kinda grease??

daveblank 02-05-2015 05:52 AM

White lithium grease maybe?

Wow never knew the swap was so darn expensive. On the bright side you now have an outer primary with the built in oiler for the newest SE compensator.

I advocate not using a ball end on those starter bolts for the reasons you mentioned.
