Default How to install rear shocks without a lift?

Just got my shipping notification for my Ohlins rears (Yay!). Problem is I don't have a way to lift the frame off the rear wheel so I can swap the shocks. Can I use a scissor jack and a 2x4 under the rear frame maybe? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

One side at a time is fine if they're same length as original. If not, buy a lift at Harbor Freight or Sears. Costs peanuts compared to the shocks or the potential damage when your bike falls off the scissors jack and 2x4.

A floor jack or scissors jack up under the rear of the frame is all you need. All you are doing is taking the weight off of the swing slightly to be able to remove. I just installed 11" shocks so i had to drop my jack a hair. For longer shock, you simply raise it a bit. All this can be done on the jiffy stand. In short you are simply unweighting the rear a bit, not actually lifting anything.

Nice. I am raising, 13 3/8" from the stock 12". If I had a garage I'd definitly spring for a lift, but I live in a condo and only have parking "spaces", so storage is tough.

If you live in a condo you need to build you one of those wooden lever jacks pictured above. The directions/plans are here on the net. The pole lever is detachable and runs through a hole so when you store it in your front hall closet all you have is the wooden block piece and a length of pipe.

Having a small compact floor jack would be handy to have for the car too.

Just remove one, no problem, remove the other and have a friend help you support the bike and make it quick! Have everything ready to go before hand.

Agreed. If you can't use a jack just have a friend lift and be ready with the hardware. Worst that could happen is he lowers the fender on the tire.
