Shimming Brake Calipers....

I need to re-shim the PM calipers on the Bob. Can I use copper washers..?

when i redid my front end i had to buy a kit to mount the caliper. it included lots of washers for shimmin - different thickness of steel and brass, no copper. don't know why, maybe copper is too soft? how much do you need to shim?

mud and some of the others who understand metals can probably give you a better idea.

I just need 1/2 a normal washer - the calipers on both ends were making contact with the disc and making a howl - happened on same day...got it shimmed enough to stop the noise but i wan't itinthe middle - thanks- I'll try copper...

This may be a stupid question, but how do you shim a brake? After I put on the new wheels and rotors I have a rubbing problem that was not there when I had my stock wheels on.

Where caliper mounts to fork, there is usually a spacer...you want the disc right down the middle of caliper. You add or subtract from the shims to put caliper in the middle.I have a 2 piece PM caliper on the back - same thing. Both my PM brakes were installed correctly - but somehow they moved underhard use...If the caliper hits he disc - it makes a loud squeal...(easy job!)...

tireater -
for such a small shim - your copper washer should be fine mechanically, but it might start turning green when exposed to the elements. Probalby can't see it anyway.

Thanks Glide05 - I got it real close for now - butI will get the proper ss shim kit (whichI gave away since I didn't use it) and do it right...I need to check and clean pistons more often - as they were pretty gooped up with road grunge... VERY EASY JOB...!
