Thoughts on swapping CV for a Mikuni 42mm? So far the only engine work I have is an S&S ez start cam, intake + pipe.
I know my MPG may take a hit but what sort of actual performance gains can I expect?
This is my opinion, since I have not done it, but you are going to gain little to nothing. The main difference will be the adjustability you will gain when you DO make more significant modifications. YOu would have to go with some performance cams / head work / big bore kit, to justify the change. If you LIKE to make meticulous changes in tuning...go for it. If you are a casual user...keep the CV.

The mikuni is a flat slide carb opposed to the CV. You're going to get MUCH quicker throttle response.
I had one on my EVO and the difference is like night and day.
One drawback is slide rattle at idle which got worse over time...but that doesn't effect performance.
I have never heard anything bad about mikuni from cars to motorcycles, nothing but good. Will you experience added performance on a stage one bike "not much if any- just as DesertDyna said. My example is " you can't stuff extra hay in a horse's mouth and expect him to run faster or pull more weight ".
As stated above. ..night and day difference. I have them on a 80" evo and a 1200s sportster. Great throttle response and pulls like a freight train. Just have to be tuned to your engine.
Had a 2001 FLHT with the stock CV carb. Spent countless hours, weeks, trying to get it dialed in. I came across a sale for the Mikuni EZ42 kit. Well, I set the idle and that was it! The slide rattle never bothered me. The performance and throttle response was night and day.
Let me be the dissenting opinion. Night and day may be a slight exaggeration...I've had 5 engines built with CV's and was happy with the smooth response on all of 'em. Bro had a Mik42 "sold" to him and it's back in the box heading for ebay. It leaked gas from a stuck float needle and frankly did not provide any big-deal improvement. I'd like to see a dyno slip or a time slip with no other changes to the bike...haven't found anything statistcally proving the claims made by the owners. I do know indy's can't sell SE stuff; so far more margin for them on a Mik swap...just saying
I just put one on my bike. Only stage one stuff, and not tuned yet. Droppin later this week to get tuned.
I didn't plan on puttin it on until later after engine work. But then my 14yr old carb needed a rebuild and instead of paying for that on something i didnt plan on keepin in the long run, i decided to get the mikuni.
Everything i have read is that everyone noticed better throttle response. Thats the main thing. It's not like you are gonna bolt it on and gain 15hp.... if you plan on engine work later, it will pay off in the long run.
