wiring new aftermarket tach
Boy, am I stumped! got a new handlemarket tach http://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Backligh...3D231573757865 for my 07 Low Rider. Took the original tach off the console, sold it and got a street bob console. No biggie on that issue. Now I want to mount the above tach on my handlebar. I had cut the original harness wires under the console to the original tach. So, I do have a HD manual which shows me the colors that went to the tach. O is ignition, LGN/V is datalink, BN/GY is battery, OW is accessory and BK is ground. The original tach worked OK. So, hopefully you are able to open up the above EBAY tach I got and can see the wires coming from the tach. I hooked up the long red wire to the O wire from the original wire. The long black wire from the tach I grounded. Gotthe tach to light up.I tried the short Y/BK wire from the newtach on the LGN/V datalink wire from the original tach harness. No response! I don't want to try other combinations for fear of toasting the tach. From the HD manual, it shows the Tach signal coming out of pin 3 in the ECM. Of course, there are no pins in it, and the original tach didn't go there either. I would think that the signal for the tach came off the LGN/V data link wire, but as I said, it didn't drive my new tach. There are more wires from the new tach that I don't think I need. ANY IDEAS out there? Thanks

Long red- positive
Long Black- Negative
Short Green- Ground
Short Yellow/Black-Engine Signal
Short Black- power/ignition lock positive
Did you supply power to the short black also? Or ground the green? Also, not sure if the data-link is going to be the same signal that the new tach requies. Hopefully someone will be more help on that part.

tach probs
Thanks for the quick response Ironcl... I did try the extra connections u wrote about, but still no luck. It may be the new tach doesn't want to work with the data-link; the original tach pulled its signal from it I'm sure, because its harness was under the console. Maybe I should get a 3-wire tach instead?

On my '04, when I wired an aftermarket tach, in the speedo connector was an unused pin with a pink plug in it. The schematic indicated it was for tach hookup. I hesitated to post this cuz you had a factory tach, but am wondering if this pin is in yours. Just maybe. I didn't want to lead you on a wild goose chase.

if you can find the pink wire under your dash I think that's the signal that tach needs. the older bikes like mine all had pink wires under the dash,, don't know about the new one but I have doubts because Harley doesn't even make analog tachs anymore so no reason to wire their bikes for them.
your best option might be to put the original dash & tach back on.. I don't even think you could install a Harley combo guage. probably not because they are not wired for the low rider. unless you bought a harness from another dyna & spliced all your wiring together. why would you sale your oem parts before you got your new ones working? that was dumb.
that's like one of my favorite features of the low rider is the stock tach & dual gauge pods.

LunaticFringe, the reason I converted my console, is because I didn't like taking my eyes off the road to look at my RPM's I was running at. I bought the LR, because it had the tach on it. I sold the console and tach on-line, so I don't have the tach setup anymore. I believe that the tach I purchased may be for a single fire ignition, and from what I read, my HD is dual fire. Really don't want to convert her to single fire with a dynatec unit.
No pink wire anywhere, the wiring schematic in my manual doesn't show a pink wire anywhere! I may contact the seller and tell him it doesn't work and see what they suggest.
IronCle..the long black and short green should be able to just go to any ground, right? Can the short black go to any wire that's positive like the red one? (power ignition lock positive??) The only wire I'm stuck with is the engine signal then.
Thanks

Ya that should work, but the hard part will be getting an analog signal for the tach if the bike doesn't have one.
Found this on another forum:
Well this whole idea went over like a fart in a church. NOBODY makes a handlebar tach OR Interface Module that will work with Harley's 'CANBUS' computer management system which on the Dynas, began in 2012. The only tach I can use besides the moronic digital in the little window, is to swap out the speedometer in the top of the tank for a tachometer which I'm going to do. I cannot understand if Harley can make that, why that can't offer JUST ONE STINKING HANDLEBAR MOUNTED TACH. I bet I spent 15 hours on internet research, talked with Dakota Digital, Namz, Custom Dynamics, Accu-Meter, you name them and I talked to them. NOTHING is CANBUS compatible except that tank top tach. I'm PISSED.....so that's what I'm going with now.

that's interesting, $140 is not too bad, its really the only option unless he wants to redo the wiring to match a standard dyna & then buy a combo gauge.
what the OP really should have done was keep the stock tach & just done a Shift light or mini tach up on the bars.
