Default Lost oil putting new derby cover on

When I changed my derby cover on its kick stand I lost most of the oil for my 2011 Fat Bob, where do I put it back in at and what type of oil, obviously I'm a beginner! As I keep reading I guess I need primary fluid for the chain case. So what kind of fluid do I need, how much and where do I put it in?

How did you manage to do that? When the derby cover comes off you shouldn't hardly lose barely any at all. Since you're a Noob, they make a HD funnel for filling it back up properly, part#63797-10. There are various options for what type of oil to refill it with. Try the search feature up at the left corner.

The bike was on the stand, so it makes perfect sense. It should be level on a lift before removing the derby.

Not to be a total D#@K, but this message SCREAMS one simple and important thing...! But first get one (service manual) that is. All the info you requested is hiding inside this magical book.

Yep... I use a 3/8" piece of wood under the jiffy when I remove the derby to adjust the clutch, it's enough to keep the fluid in place.

The primary holds 32 ounces , if you've lost a portion of the fluid and don't know what fluid was used I'd drain it all and start again. I use SAE 30, you can use 20w-50 or even that nasty HD Formula + if you'd like but I agree, the owners manual is your friend.

You can find an assortment of how-to videos on YouTube to walk you through the process of replacing the primary fluid...

I picked one of these up from HF a month ago or so, used a 20% off coupon so it was only 40 some odd bucks, you just can't beat that.

Makes some things so quick and easy to do, would suit a task like this perfectly.

Sigh. You don't have to buy a $60 service manual just to change the fluids. Its in the Users manual that comes with the bike.
OR here:
https://www.harley-davidson.com/cont...rs-manual.html

(So I don't get flamed) If you decide to work on more than the normal fluid maintenance, then yes, the service manual will be a good investment.
