Primary ?

I just returned home from a 3,200 mile trip on my '06 SB with 37,000 miles. Before this trip I had noticed a slight leak at the bottom of my primary case, I had the stator replaced last year while on a trip in Colorado (I live in Michigan). During this trip the oil leak became more obvious as it came up the side of the primary case. I did change the oil in the primary while at my brothers in South Dakota just to make sure there was plenty of oil for the return ride. Now I will order a new gasket and tear down to replace. My question with 37,000 miles what else should I be looking at while I have the case off. Other then the stator nothing has been replaced or repaired on this bike. Thanks for any suggestions on upgrades or needed fixes. Terry

Go down in the trans/primary tech section and then do a search several things it could be. Could be a IPB seal, shifter shaft seal or a 5thgear shaft seal, I just did a 5th gear main shift seal . A mirror and a flash light will help you find the trail of oil, clean it up good then go for a 20 mile ride and then have a look see :icon_beerchug:

Use a good flashlight and small mirror and check the shift shaft seal. You are at the magic mileage for that seal. Did that year get the auto tensioner for the primary chain? If so maybe the IPB seal. Thought the 06 and 07's had some issues with the chain getting too tight and affecting the IPB.

Have you ruled out the derby cover? I had oil on the bottom of my primary case and thats whats where it come from. I pinpointed it after cleaning everything and going for a short ride

I can't offer any technical suggestions, but for those who know more then me, I think this is really his question, rather then how to fix the leak?

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas. It is definitely not the derby cover as suggested, I am almost sure the it is the gasket on the cover, but I will take a close look at other seals as well. Also look at the chain tensioner and upgrade if there is one. Thanks again.

If your not having any issues with banging on start up or high amounts of metal flakes in Primary, I'd replace the shift tower seal and outer primary gasket as well as inspecting chain tensioner. Put it back together, add some fluid, and be done with it.

Inspect your Chain Tensioner!

Baby powder is you friend! Clean it off with degreaser, powder it and take it for a ride. You'll find your leak pretty quick.

Hayden M6 chain tensioner

I purchased one for a bad weather day project. New primary gasket too.
Good time to change the oil and adjust the clutch.
