need advice on swap to mid controls
Just put a deposit on a 2007 Low Rider for the wife. The bike has forward controls installed, and are too far away for my wife to comfortably reach. I want to return the bike to its original mid control condition. Ive noticed that the previous owner has capped off the hole in the outer primary, where the original shift lever attached. This cap extends a good half inch or better from the outer primary cover. My guess is that in order for this cap to be installed the original shift shaft must still be intact. The bike is not due to be picked up until February and its too far away for me to look over. Id like to get stated in finding a takeoff set of mid controls. Am I right in assuming that in order for this cap that protrudes to be installed, there MUST be a shift shaft still there to attach to? If so would I be right in assuming that the lever to the shift linkage is still intact too, thus eliminating my need to pull both the inner and outer primary? Last but not least would the further forward mid controls from the 2014 plus low riders install the same way without pulling primaries? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Have the current owner / dealer reach / look behind the primary cover where the shaft would come out the back. If you're lucky it will be there and you'll just have to figure out how to get it useable. If it is then you should be able to just install a mid kit and go, if not you're looking at a whole primary pull to make the mod possible. According to the HD site, the Low Riders further forward kit works on the 07' Low Rider. So you would need the kit (50500386), the brake bar linkage (42502-90A) and the shift linkage rod (33728-06) for the mid setup.

That blows!!! Hope the arm is still intact. Why would anyone leave the shaft but hack off the arm?

Here's some pics f my 09 FXD that I installed Kuryakyn forwards to showing the cap that covers the still existing mid control shaft.
The shaft has to be there for the cap to fit.
The back side of the shaft is held in place by a clip bolted to the shift lever and presses against the inside of the primary,, keeping it stationary.

If for some reason the shifter shaft is not in tact, taking the inner and outer primary off is not a big deal. I just did it for the first time to have both powder coated. It's not as a scary as you may think. Camden did a great write up with lots of pics. I used that and the service manual.
