1999 FXDL Speedo swap to 5" wiring help
 

Guys,

I am switching my speedo on my 99 Fxdl. The 5" speedo that I bought pn 67096-04c has a different connector, so I purchased the new connectors and I am in the process of wiring it up. I have the two wiring diagrams below. On the 99, the plug is wired directly to the speed sensor. It looks like the new models get this signal from the ECM. Is there a way to bypass this and still wire direct? Also the green and white wire from 99 says it was used for speed signal out, not sure where this belongs in the new speedo. I do not plan on running a tac in the future. Any ideas?

2006 wiring harness

An 06 fuel injected should have an ecm but a 99 carb'd bike will not. They may not be compatible. I would find out what the speed sensor and ecm put out signal wise to the speedometer. The power and ground are the easy ones. Just draw up a wiring diagram that shows what the newer speedometer hooks up to in terms of the 99 harness.

The 5" speedo is a 2004 part number (maybe used in other non-dyna models?). You may get more pertinent info if you use an '04 wiring diagram. I only have '99 and '09, so can't help there.

That "databus" pin concerns me...

Speed signal out goes to the turn signal module for the self cancel feature. Not strictly required.

You can always try to wire the signal input direct to the speed sensor. I have no idea what kind of signal the speedo is looking for. If it's a square wave and the pulses match up you should be GTG. Otherwise, best case, your speed will "work" and be inaccurate. Worst case, you get to see the magic smoke (not likely).

It would be easier to use a speedometer from Dakota Digital.

Thanks guys for the input. I found a 2004 schematic for carb models which should be better. Comparing these two is much better. I have the following with the 99 wires on the left, to the pin on the new speedo to the right:

White/Green (Data/TSM) pin 2
Orange/White (accessory power) pin 6
Black (Ground) pin 7
Trip Switch (Odometer) pin 8,11

I am still not sure on the Black/Yellow wire. it says it is the check engine wire on the 99 diagram. It ends on the diagram at the main harness plug, but on my bike I can trace the wire farther than that. Also I feel like i need something in the 1 pin on the new speedo, since it says power. cggorman, your saying to wire the Speed sensor directly to the wire from the main harness?

2004 carb model dyna

99 has the speed sensor in the trans, correct? Where is the speed sensor on the 04?

Edit: it's 10 on the ignition control module but where does it go?

The speed sensor is three wires. V+, gnd, and signal out. I don't know off hand where the V+ comes from or what voltage it is. Should be either 5v from the ignition module or 12v from either ignition circuit or ignition module. It's gonna output a square wave that the speedo may or may not be able to interpret. If you're not into the 5" dial for much $, it may be worth trying it. There IS a small risk that the output voltage from the sensor could blow the speedo input, so if you can't determine the input requirements and have a bundle wrapped up in the new gauge, it might be too much of a risk and worth looking at a programmable aftermarket unit.

I don't know off hand if the speed sensor signal on the 99 goes thru the ignition module or not, but it shouldn't make any difference. Even if it does, I doubt the ECM is manipulating the signal.

I suggest checking speed sensor part numbers on the 99 and whatever 04 uses that 5" gauge. If they're the same, you should be in pretty good shape.

Yamaharley, yes the speed sensor is on the trans on the 99. Not sure on the 04, every diagram I see shows no wire going to the sensor, and cannot seem to locate how its routed. All the diagrams for 2004 that I saw showed this:

So, as I suspected, the speed signal is NOT routed thru the ICM. It just goes directly from the sensor to the speedo. Refer to speedo pinout.

So in theory I should be able to wire the sensor directly to the speedo in pin 2, any ideas on the check engine wire Black/Yellow from the 99?
