Unhappy Trouble riding my dyna :( back issues

I've having some serious trouble with the weight of the evo dyna. With my back and hip as bad as they are I can't ride around town without serious pain. I just hobbled in from the hospital, I used the dyna for maybe an hour at most. Its one hell of a bad flairup. For the sake of comparison I'm 6'1" around 150lbs.

It's not the weight, more so how the bike carries it. It's not the seat but the width of the bike keeping my hip in a bad spot... And forget having to put my feet down. It's just so unwieldy around town. The other bike is half the weight... Like really it's 298 v over 500 on the dyna.

I'm not selling the dyna, I want to try a few more things(ohlins if I can swing it, taller risers, and refoam my stock seat). I have too much memories in it to ever sell. Had the bike around a decade now. Maybe I'm just used to the lighter bike I've been using.

So my question... What do you guys with back issues do to keep your knees in the breeze?

Maybe I should just get a standard(versys, vstrom, fz)...

Bars I'm going to keep messing with. I'm running biltwell chumps and like the wrist position. My back is leaning forward though, I kind of miss having the z bars on because my back was straighter. The problem with the zs were that they are so narrow you feel every pound of the bike.

I've been thinking of getting a mustang as I like the one my dad's running. Might have to go with a backrest, but unless I try riding with one it might actually cause some problems.

In '83 I bought a '81 Sportster , I could not ride it more than 1hr -- so I sold it to my brother , I got it back 10 yr ago same problem I found out about Gel pads ,I tour the cover off removed some foam added 1/4" of gel pad , now I ride all day long

To much vibration foe me on the lower back
$30 Fix
I like gel so much I also have it on my Tour Glide
you can buy a gel pad that is covered to move around on anything on ebay-- gel pad for motorcycles

I need to redo my stock seats cover so I think I'm going to either find a really nice quality foam and/or use a gel pad. My stock seat was awesome until it ripped.

I actually just redid the wr250r seat with a seat concept kit. The foam was unreal... Like really really awesome foam. Took me 30 minutes with the original seat pan and boom.

It's so comfy when you ride you don't even think about it... Plus the stock one gives you blisters on places once thought unblisterable. Yeah...

Before you start throwing money at the problem, you need to assess your ergonomics. A physio therapist, occupational therapist can assess how you are seated. Too forward , too back, height of bars, etc. They do this for bicycle riders, same concept. You can have the best parts, but if your body positioning is off, it doesn't matter what parts you have.

it's like having your car drivers seat not set right. No matter how much cushion or best shocks , if your driver's position of your seat isn't set right you'll still be in pain driving a car.

I agree. When I ride with my posture in good form(my back is perpendicular to the bike) it's not a problem. I'm going to completely figure out my seat situation. Any modification to the seat will alter my final position. I'm really glad I kept my mids controls, I should go back to them.

Maybe a seat with a built in backrest, and some mini footboards could help change the posture, I went from forwards to floorboards on my Fatbob, and riding position is night and day, I have back and knee ops, but this setup helps loads.

Posture, posture, posture!!!! Do you have a way to stand the bike up straight without your help, front tire rack, frame jack or someone elses assistance? If so, set it up so you can sit on it with you hands and feet not touching anything, sit up straight and put your hands out in front of you in a comfortable position and then do the same with your feet. Have someone take a profile picture and a from the front shot along with measuring your grip width. This will help determine where you need to position your bars or any needed seat mods to move you forward or back to achieve this natural postured position.

When I ride distance, I wear a back alingment support brace, it is very helpful.

Believe it or not my dad's fxdc has floorboards and I actually like them a lot. They are a bit too forward for my taste but the kit for evos sits higher than the 09 tc one.

Today I'm going to figure out what my stock seat is. Then check out the foam. Make a dish for gel and fix the rip before putting it all back together with new staples. Mids are also going back on. Because I grew up in the dirt I have a tendency to use my knees to pinch the tank and steer with my hips(tough on a harley, easy on a light bike). With mids I can also stand on the pegs to take bumps.
