Default Sheared my rear pulley bolts off today

2008 FXDF. 9k miles and stock driveline. Wheels and pulley were powdercoated in 2015.

Nice cruise with with a couple riders today and I felt and heard a huge snap from my rear in a corner Bike tried to buck me off in a little highside but I stayed on.

After coasting I discover my pulley was broken with all the bolts sheared right off. My guess is no loctite was used from the shop and they backed out.

Im pretty good at checking things over but did not put a torque wrench on these. Visually they looked fine a short time ago.

Belt looks fine. Without changing belt or front pulley what size rear pulley can I go up to?

Will get it on a lift and see if rear wheel is salvageable this weekend.

You trash the hub aswell? Take a good look at the hub threads and make sure it's not oval shaped.

This plays on my mind a bit as I've seen this happen a fair few times. Particularly dynas with big power. A hard case performance locker kit might be a good investment.

Default Pulley Bolts

The pulley bolts are supposed to be replaced any time you take the pulley apart form the hub. I'd be willing to bet they were not replaced when your powder coat was done.
Your lucky...lesson learned.

Damn. That would have been helpful.

If snyone has stock or larger rear pulley and wheel, let me know.

Wasn't able to get it on lift today. Luckily I have a three day weekend to find some time.

I've got a stock '09 FXDC pulley taking up space somewhere in my garage. It's silver though.

Shoot me a pm if you want it.

I think I might also have a new set of ARP pulley bolts that I can't use...

Racine Harley replaced my Pulley bolts when they put my tires on. I asked them why and they said they can only be used twice. It's in the service manual. I'm not at home so I can't show it, but I have posted it in the past.

I told my Indy. He didn't believe it. Sounds like cheap insurance to me.

That's why the service manual more than pays for itself.
And you can't check bolts visually, need to put wrench on them.

Default sooooo....

Lessons from my old car racing days would make me want to install studs. Has anyone tried this? Does someone make purpose built stud kit? You'll have to excuse my ignorance. I don't get out much. Maybe I'm just too redneck to understand.

after installing studs, has anyone considered drilling the hub and wheel to install an alignment pin? The pin would take up most of the torque allowing the bolts to do their job of holding the pulley to the hub.
