Default New Guy - Eastern NC - ready to customize

Hey. Im Craig. Just got first Harley. 2009 dyna superglide with 10k miles. Can't wait to customize. First thing is replace these low stock bars with 12" apes. Do I have to change controls?. Also want to put forward controls on it for my long legs. Any advise is appreciated

Pictures attached. My bike is the left. Brothers just picked up the bobber on the right, more the look I'm going for.

I am putting new 12" handlebars on my 2011 dyna over the winter. I got the bars mounted and figured it adds a solid 6 inches to everything.

So I am planning on a new clutch cable, a new throttle cable, a new brake line and on extending the electrics wires for both sides.

I like to use oem when I can so my local harley shop has a fellow who is pretty familiar with what clutch cable from what model will work and add 6" to mine. Same for the others.

I have seen but now have to go on a search for plug in wire extenders, just segments with the connectors on each end so I will fish mine out, plug these in and not have to deal with splicing.

Let us know how you do.

Congratulations! I'm in the same boat. Just got an 07 FXDB and am getting started on making it my own. I'm shorter and grew up riding bmx's and dirt bikes so I'm actually taking OFF extended forward controls this Saturday. 2" further forward than forward controls. I'm not a fan of the forward controls but it's probably just not what I'm used to, and since my legs are shorter I feel like I lose a lot of control. I have some friends that love it though. Definitely a personal preference thing.

You should have enough wiring in the backbone to get you where you need.

I would upgrade the lines and go with a braided steel brake line. OEM is not the best choice for this. Braided lines will give you more braking force and better lever feel. Braided lines won’t expand when brakes are applied like OEM does.

I use Magnum Shielding products, but there are less expensive braided options out there.

You guys that use the service loop excess to make up wire for taller bars, do you ever expose the connectors or are they buried deep enough in the frame to keep them.hidden?

Just curious.

For 12,14” bars from what I’ve experienced, the connectors are well in the backbone to stay out of sight 18” apes and they MIGHT be visible.

No problem! The one thing I can say, is that getting the mess of wires untangled and slack pulled out of the frame is worse than untangling my kids fishing reel line tangles😬

OP, I know my 2013 SG does NOT have enough existing wiring to extend to 12' apes. All cables are to short also. Your 2009 could be different.
