Default Stage 1 intake/Air cleaners swaps w/o tune

Who's done it? I'm running the Stage 1 huge oval "103 High Output" setup now on my 16' Fat Bob. Bike runs fine and I thought of getting a K&N to swap out and be done with it until I sat on a used bike this weekend realized how much more room my right leg/knee has to hug the motor n tank when the intake is the big "J"/spike type that curves to the front. Any suggestions?

Not what you want to hear, but I'm in the camp that thinks a good tune/tuner is the foundation from which all other engine mods build. You'll reap benefits from tuning a bone stock engine and any change thereafter benefits even more from tuning.

Well I've got Stage 1 (which I think is just air cleaner/intake from stock), V&H pipes, aside from that all stock. Bike has been dyno'd at a dealer prior to my owning it, so that just leaves the question if I were to change the intake to another stage 1 would I NEED a new tune or just wait and see? Assuming it's a HD intake, there'd be a canned map for it right? I've got the orange SESTP unit, just need the cable kit. Otherwise if I went with an Arlen Ness unit lets say, it's a little off for Stage1 to stage1 comparison right?

Go ahaed and swap. You can tune it later.

No NEED to tune just because of a A/C swap. You won't hurt anything.

Great to hear, not sure what the one I have now would be worth but it needs to go, it was much more natural feeling with the different style unit for sure. Thanks for the replies.

I totally agree. I've got one.

For valuation of your current one, search ebay. Or just put a for sale ad in our classifieds and see what people offer.

I had the 103" HO "high flow" with a K&N filter but wasn't happy with it and got an Arlen Ness stage 1.

The difference in seat of the pants feeling, response and sound was VERY noticable...high flow my ***.

I have a slip on, gutted head pipe, intake and a power commander w/ fuel moto provided map with a little fine tuning on the fly. My bike screams.

If you go on fuelmoto and look at their dyno sheets, I believe they have a 103 HO intake on there somewhere for comparison.

I had the spike type and could see the filter suck in on Acceleration. That ment to me that it was restricting airflow.

Nice bit about the Fuel Moto, do you get software and tuning module same as with the orange SESPT I've got now, or is that more plug-n-play? Curious how they differ and what it'd cost to get into that one compared to where I'm already at. Would I still need my SESPT unit going to any dealer if I had issue, then would they overwrite my FuelMoto map? The sucking of the filter I guess happens one any bike, maybe just more noticeable since you can see it, all under vacuum sucking air right?!
