Default Synthetic or conventional oil for older 04 dyna low rider

I'm downgrading from touring to dyna and have an oil question. Local shop said synthetic is to thin for older bike and will leak like crazy. They said use straight 20/50. Not sure what is in the bike now so what do y'all suggest and why?

You are going to get a million answers.
Personally, I run VR-1 20-50 non-synthetic in my '01. Not because I've had any issues, it's just an oil I trust and I run it in my solid lifter cars because it has high zinc content.

I have run synthetic and non-synthetic in other bikes and I think the synthetic reduced top end noise but personally I think it ran hotter. I think dino oil absorbs and transfers more heat out of the engine, but I have no scientific backing to prove that.

good luck.

Your local shop is full of it. If a vehicle leaks after switching to synthetic oil you already had a leak, the synthetic only cleaned out any sludge that was plugging up the leak.

You can run synthetic oil no problem.

Ran synthetic in my old 04. Never had problems with leaks that weren't caused by pre-existing bad seals...

Old wives tale / urban myth.

I run full synthetic in EVERYTHING...even my snow blower...and my 99 is my newest/youngest vehicle. Oldest right now a 69 Chevy.

Run either, won`t hurt at all. Just change out at the recommended mileage.

FWIW...my 65K mile 01 FXD had Syn-3 in all the holes when I got it a few years and some 35K miles back and I used the same Syn-3 oil in all the holes until this last change when I put the HD Formula + in the transmission and primary...gotta take that stuff out...no bueno for my ride.

My son changed from Syn 3 in the engine to Mobil 1 V Twin 20W-50 and HD Formula + in the transmission and primary in his 18K mile '04 FXDLI. I cannot tell any difference with the way that engine runs or sounds. It sounds smooth and runs and rides like a typical low-mile TC-88, Low Rider.

Go figure, the Formula + really made a positive difference with the '04 Low Rider transmission shifting...it's quieter, smoother, has a more solid in-gear feel, the exact opposite way it works in my '01 Super Glide.

I've been using Mobil 0ne 20/50 in my 04 FXDL forever. Never had a leak, some people sure are hung up on Harley's leaking.
